f2.8 lens

Would I be ok with the non OS one? I have a monopod I can use, does it mean that I will get more blurry shots if I have the non OS one?

You should get a better 'keeper' rate as at longer focal lengths, blur is more likely due to camera shake. OS will counteract a certain amount of camera shake so you should get more images with better focus.

Many people manage just fine without OS. If you have a monopod that will help for sure:)

I do have a monopod, but now i am aware of the OS ones i am wondering if i should hang on and buy one with that on.

Unfortunately that's a choice only you can make.

i know i would be better off with the OS one,but struggling to find one at a decent price

Reading from earlier that you're going to be shooting cross country and show jumping, I'm not sure that OS is actually going to make much difference to you as you'd typically turn it off at high shutter speeds anyway.

That said the Sigma 70-200 OS is the best of there of their 70-200's so it may still be worth going for in terms of pure optical quality.

Why would you turn OS off at higher shutter speeds??

Because OS is there to help with slow shutter speeds. It is completely useless at fast shutter speeds, as the shutter speed is already freezing the motion of shake.

Indeed and as I understand it it can start to work against you at higher speeds though I'd be way out of my depth trying to explain why.

One article about it here but plenty more on google.

So i would possibly be better off with the non OS version,i was thinking i was going to get that one as its a bit more in budget and see how i get on with it.Just seen this on ebay

Nikon Zoom-Nikkor IF-ED 80-200mm f/2.8D AF-S Lens

is this compatable with my camera?its got a buy it now of £425

No the 80-200 does not have a built in focus motor so will not auto focus on your camera.
You need one of the Sigma ones or a Nikon 70-200 which is much more expensive

I will have to keep looking then grrrr.

is this the one Sigma EX 70-200mm f2.8 APO DG HSM Macro Digital Camera Lens??

got me eye on one on ebay currently £295 3 days to go,was going to put max bid at £400??

Have you got a link to it - that could be the older version but it sounds like the 2006 one - not a bad lens

See post number 15 - I put up the history of these lenses

If its AF-S yes it will work. Sounds cheap for an AF-S one tho.

If its AF-S, then it will autofocus, if its AF-D it wont.

If it doesnt say AF-S, then it isnt, its AF-D.

Jules is it AF-S?

AF-S is a Nikon thing - its HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) which means it has pretty much the same autofocus motor as the newer Nikon lenses. It will work perfectly on your camera - the only thing that probably will not work is autofocus in live view - I had the HSM II and it would not live view autofocus on my D7000. It never bothered me as I don't use live view. The newer Sigma 70-200 OS works 100% though (live view included).
Sigma will upgrade the software in the lens for I believe about £30 if the live view thing bothers you.

And Tom is right (my bad) that 80-200 AF-S should work OK from what I can tell on a D3100 - I think its the older AF-D that needs a motor built in to the body to drive the AF system

Sigmas version is HSM. Yes the one linked is HSM its the same model I use and its awesome.
I also used it on my d3100 as well as my d700 and it works fine.

Ok if this will work I will keep an eye on it.I might be able to stretch to a bit more money wise this week, bumper pay day last week :-)
Cheers

That's the last version before they added OS. Same as the one I had and its a great lens.
I would hope at that price it's in spotless condition though - I think thats a bit pricey but it is LCE so you do get some comeback

do you think its worth the money??the one i was watching on ebay has just shot up to £370 and still 2 days to go

That's a very broad question. What do you plan to shoot? What other lenses do you own? 2.8 strictly? or including larger aperture primes?

You could get: 35mm 1.8G, 50mm 1.8G, 40mm 2.8 macro, 85 1.8G, 60mm 2.8 micro ... all useful in their own right. If you're after something a little more flexible, look to the likes of the tamron or sigma 17-50 2.8 models.

is the Nikon 35 mm / F 1,8 G best for making movie?

I would rather buy from LCE than fleabay - at least you get some comeback if theres a problem.
Also, buying from LCE supports your local camera shop and helps reduce the likelihood of them going the way Jessop's have just gone:thumbsdown:

£500 is quite a lot for one of those but as long as its in tiptop condition, it should be fine and serve you well.
Just remember whaty I said about liveview - it may not work but you can get it re-chipped by Sigma.
Best thing to do - take your camera in there and ask them if you can have a play with it;)

I agree about buying from a shop as opposed to flea bay but trying the lens is not possible as the shop is miles from me its about £50 dearer than I would like to pay I was looking around £450 I am going to ring them tomorrow

i bought my camera from jessops instead of amazon which sell it 100 pounds cheaper!sadly there closing now though.
at least there was one benefit in buying from jessops i got my camera in glossy red and i never liked the matt rainy design on nikons in the first place.

Just found two lens on gumtree

The first one is HSM II (2007 version) and the other sounds like the 2006 version.
Get the first one. Go on - you know you want to.

The "gold ring" bit just means its in the EX line up - Sigma's 'pro spec' lenses of which these all are

£420 is a fair price as long as its in good condition. These lenses suffer from 'flakey skin' where the paint is a funny type of rubberised paint which feels real nice but does peel with age.
The newer OS version does not have this problem

IMO you only want the macro or the macro II version. The others are too old and not as good optically.

I am going over to Cardiff in an hour to have a look at this one

Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II - NIKON fit

he said he will accept £420 just hope its in great condition,he said it is,will take me camera to.
