F1 season 2015

They have certainly done some underhand things in bygone seasons to make me think they will go to any lengths of rule bending / breaking to win

They have been quite good at flexing.rules, bodywork, fuel system flows...

They have certainly done some underhand things in bygone seasons to make me think they will go to any lengths of rule bending / breaking to win

Not excusing it, but they are far from the only team to do that

Put simply, Red Bull's strength is their chassis and aero and their weakness is the power unit. So it's obvious that Horner thinks the most important thing for F1 is to change the engine/power unit to 'reduce costs'...............
Toys out of pram again when all Red Bull and Renault need to do is do a better job as he used to say about the other teams when RB were wining, quickly losing respect for Mr Horner.

Not excusing it, but they are far from the only team to do that
Too true but they are near the top for the best
Disqualified Australia
Disqualified abu dhabi quali
Not bad for 1 season

"I'm Fernando, I'm in karts and want to become Formula 1 driver," Alonso told doctors, Le Pais newspaper claims.

Ron should have renegotiated his contract :D

In other news, a new safety and medical car announced.

New Mercedes-AMG GT S safety car for 2015

29337.3.jpg

Formula One will have a new safety car in the form of the Mercedes-AMG GT S this year as well as a new Mercedes-AMG C63 S medical car.

The safety car will again be driven by Bernd Maylander while his passenger Peter Tibbetts keeps in touch with race control and monitors the race via an on-board iPad. The safety car is deployed when bad weather or incidents pose a threat to the safe continuation of the race and it made an appearance at 10 of 19 grands prix last season.

"The gull-wing SLS AMG was my official car in Formula One for five years," Maylander said. "Now I'm looking forward to the new Mercedes-AMG GT S, which I have been fortunate enough to get to know during its development phase. The new AMG sports car won me over immediately with its high-calibre race track performance."

The C63 S medical car is driven by Alan van der Merwe, who is accompanied by Dr Ian Roberts, the FIA's head physician. It also features a 4.0-litre V8 producing 510bhp, but its extra bulk means its 0-60 time is 4.1s. In the back it has space for one or two additional medics as well as medical equipment, including a defibrillator and respirator.

And a comment by DC on "AlonsoGate" ;)

Fernando Alonso: David Coulthard says crash 'does not add up'
By Gary RoseBBC Sport

"Something does not add up" about Fernando Alonso's pre-season testing crash, according to former McLaren driver David Coulthard.

Alonso, 33, crashed in his McLaren during the second pre-season test in Barcelona last month, suffering concussion.

The Spaniard will miss next weekend's season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

"I think there is more to this than we are being told about at this time," said BBC F1 co-commentator Coulthard.

McLaren boss Ron Dennis said four days after the incident that Alonso was not concussed and Coulthard added: "There is conflicting information coming out, saying there are zero signs of any injury but then three days of hospital for concussion.

"It does not add up. He does not need three days of privacy, he can go to his own private residence and have that."

All this controvosy because mc larean are being secretive about the data and the media / pundits are filling in the gaps with there own theories
Medical information is data protected so a lot of that is being made up as well
The FIA will investigate but I think no one will be any the wiser afterwards
When you look at what has been written as fact
Alonso went wide due to a gust of wind and put a wheel on the grass
The only person near him was Vettal and he says he didnt see how the accident happened
There is supposidly a low res film of the crash but no one has seen it

Alonso's speed has been quoted as 134 mph
worked out by gps? and the premiss he was going faster than the lap before and even that varies on which report you read
Honest ron says he wasnt unconcious
Still being quoted even though he retracted it later
Neither honest ron or coultard are doctors
What do they know more than gary hartstein and his blog makes more sense

It would be nice if for once in F1 someone stood up and told the truth

Nobody yet knows the truth and until the season starts, this story is keeping F1 in the news. Whether the truth (as in the whole truth!) will ever be known is debatable and at the moment, all we know is that Alonso has been deemed not fit to drive in Australia having crashed during testing.

Alonso been busy tweeting saying

https://BANNED/alo_oficial/status/573885001046994944

I think he's doing well just taking a deserved break and letting his body heal for a few weeks by the looks of that

GPDA have also had a say.

Then it emerged that Grand Prix Drivers’ Association president Alex Wurz had circulated a letter to the active drivers about the incident.

In his letter to the active drivers, the former Williams driver hinted that the real question is not about safety standards, but the details of Alonso’s medical situation.

Speculation is now rampant that the 33-year-old blacked out at the wheel of his McLaren-Honda before veering into the wall.

“Understanding is one thing, drawing conclusions is another,” Wurz told the British newspaper. “I have asked the drivers to be patient.

Interesting statement
"To all intents and purposes, nobody would ever know," he continued. "The public would never know. It would not alter the way they see the races. It wouldn't change the spectacle. It would just mean that instead of incurring big losses, these teams would be able to make a profit.
So that puts me in the dumb sh1ts corner then does it

So for a team with limited income, who swapped drivers for another with more money paid for him to drive, they are now lookign at buying out van der Garde?

So for a team with limited income, who swapped drivers for another with more money paid for him to drive, they are now lookign at buying out van der Garde?
I would say thats the top and bottom of it ,unless the court rules van der garde has the right to race this weekend. Which would make the whole thing wierd

The team can't let him race though? No practice in the car, probably no simulator time? Maybe they will and share the drive between him and Nasr over races...

Would that make them in contempt of court

Not yet, don't think the court has ordered Sauber to do anything directly just ruled the contract that van de Garde has is a valid one. It would now be down to van de Garde to decide what to do with that ruling, sue for damages would seem the most likely but would he really want to do that as it would kill any chance of signing for other teams surely. Anyone remember that Nelson Jnr bloke after he rocked the boat.....

With regards to Van de garde
He failed to apply for his super license and could now be in breach of contract with Sauber
http://joeblogsf1.com/

Van de gaurd files contempt of court if not allowed to race (if he has a super licence that is )
Could apparently use force demajure (if spelt right) to fast track it
Or will the FIA be on the side of Sauber

Technical Regulation Changes

- The number of power units that a driver may use in a season will be reduced from five in 2014 to four in 2015.
- The rules regarding engine development that were introduced in 2014 will change, with the manufacturers allowed to perform half the development permitted in 2014; the development will be halved again in 2016.
- Following the backlash over "ugly" nose designs in 2014, the FIA moved to amend the rules surrounding nose designs for the 2015 season. Noses will now be lower than in 2014, retaining a minimum cross section, but they must taper to a point at a fixed linear rate, effectively outlawing the dramatic finger shapes seen in 2014 in favour of a more gradual shape. Furthermore, the design of the nose must be symmetrical and consistent with the centreline of the car, thereby banning the more exotic designs, such as the "twin-tusk" approach used by Lotus on the E22 chassis.[56]
- The minimum weight of the cars at all times during an event was increased to 702 kilograms (1,548 lb).
- The ban on Front-and-Rear Interconnected suspension systems (FRIC) implemented in the middle of the 2014 season was formalised, with the regulations stating that the front and rear suspension must be designed in such a way that any change in performance must be a direct result of a change in load applied solely to them.
- The anti-intrusion panels on both sides of the survival cell have been extended upwards to the rim of the cockpit and alongside the driver's head.

Sporting Regulation Changes

- The replacement of a complete power unit will no longer result in a penalty. Instead, penalties will be applied cumulatively for individual components of the power unit. If such a grid place penalty is imposed and the driver's grid position is such that the full penalty cannot be applied, then the remainder of the penalty will no longer be carried over to the next race, but will instead be applied in the form of a time penalty during the race corresponding to the number of grid spaces remaining in the penalty.
- In addition to the existing five-second penalty that may be served during a driver's scheduled pit stop, a new ten-second penalty that will have to be served in the same manner, will be introduced.
- If a car is deemed to have been released from its pit stop in an unsafe manner, the driver will receive a ten second stop-and-go penalty. Further penalties will be applied if the stewards believe that the driver is aware of this and attempts to drive the car regardless.
- The qualifying procedure has been further clarified to cater to different sizes of starting grids: if twenty-four cars are entered for the race, seven will be eliminated after the each of the first two qualifying segments; if twenty-two are entered, six will be eliminated after each qualifying segment and so on if fewer cars are eligible.
- The partial ban on pit-to-car communication introduced at the 2014 Singapore Grand Prix will be extended to include a blanket ban on sharing technical data between team and driver, such as specific fuel consumption settings.
- Double points will no longer be awarded at the final event of the championship.
- In light of a regulation introduced in 2014 dictating that a race can not run for more than four hours and following recommendations from the report into Jules Bianchi's accident the previous season, the start times of five Grands Prix have been brought forward by one hour, so that races do not start with less than four hours until dusk. Thus, the Australian, Malaysia, Chinese, Japanese and Russian Grands Prix will start an hour earlier than in 2014.
- In the aftermath of Bianchi's accident, a new procedure called virtual safety car (VSC) will be introduced, obliging drivers to reduce their speed to match the one indicated on their displays on their steering wheels. The procedure may be initiated when double waved yellow flags are needed on any section of a circuit where competitors and officials may be in danger, but the circumstances are not as such to warrant deployment of the actual safety car.
- The safety car procedure was amended. Once the last lapped car has passed the leader, the safety car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap. This is a change of the previous practice which required the unlapped cars to have caught up with the back of the pack before the safety car could return to the pits.
- If a race is suspended, the cars will no longer line up on the grid but will slowly proceed to the pit lane instead. Pit exit will be closed and the first car to arrive in the pit lane will proceed to the exit with the other lining up behind the first one.
- If any team personnel or team equipment remain on the grid after the fifteen-second signal has been shown before the start of the formation lap, the driver of the car concerned must start the race from the pit lane. If the driver concerned fails to obey this, they will receive a ten second stop-and-go penalty.
- Drivers are no longer permitted to change the design of their helmet in-season.

Thanks Kevin.........great to see all that info at a glance.

Unlucky... If you don't have sky, you're lucky you didn't have to watch that.....

So the Merc shows its still a class of its own.

In other news Honda is considering changing its slogan from "the power of dreams" to "stuff of nightmares" ;).

Poor Jenson...

There's an interesting comment from Ron, pointing out they only have 4 engines for the year and red bull have pushed it and blown one already. They've taken the decision to turn theirs down for reliability, hence the lack of pace. The car looked reasonably settled and stable with button though, so if they can get the power up it'll be interesting.

Yes, but it's also penalties for each component this year too, those penalties aren't carried over to the next race and they would add time on to a race time at the end so it would make more sense to risk it turned up than look stupid, as they did do today... To test their speed over 3 laps at the expense of 1 engine wouldn't have been that bad, compared to last on the grid I don't think, if they were up near the top, it would've been a lot better for morale

I think mclaren are building for the future not for the instant. Putting pressure on the engine at this stage of development, especially considering the off season testing, isn't sensible. There's no morale issue as they knew they wouldn't be competitive for the first two or three races.

Honest Ron is correct it looks a lot better to complete the race in the 4hrs aloted before night falls than actually go racing and blow up an engine
They arnt allowed only 4 engines they are allowed 4 engines before penalties
