Just watching the F1 Forum on BBC1 red button and the RedBull team are messing about in a swimming pool ON TOP of their motorhome in the paddock.

There are two 'togs with what look like gripped 1Ds in the pool with them ! :cuckoo:

I hope the £££ they get for the photos covers the replacement of the equipment used to get them ! Is this the thinking ?

RedBull gives you wings, but does it waterproof your camera ?

well the BBC team on the boat had a cameraman in the jacuzzi :D

That was funny, poor guy was stood in there for well opver an hour! Would have had wrinkly feet after that!

I love watching the F1 you get some real lens envy!

You cant grip 1Ds's, they have a 'grip' as part of the body.......and they'll probably be fine with splashes, just not extended submersion.

+1 for a having a pool on top of the motorhome though, that's pretty cool :)

Good point... looked expensive enough for me not to want to try it though...

It's wasn't a small pool either !

Im sure those very cameras have been a lot lot wetter when its a rainy race weekend.

This is why Pro cameras that are designed for sports like the 1d and the L lenses have weather seals.

I think you may be missing the real action mate if your lens envy takes over!

Excuse me, this is F1 we are talking about........

........only time that gets exciting is when it rains!

were you not watching today?? plenty of drama, right down to the last corner with Alonso and Schumy

you mean you don't have a swimming pool on the top of YOUR motorhome? Peasants!

I love watching the F1 you get some real lens envy!
and posh car envy, and superyacht envy, and well cannot say as the wife is in the room envy....:nono::naughty:

Yes I was watching and, apart form Alonso's overtakes in the tunnel, the only excitement is waiting to see whether Schumacher will get away with his overtake.

The rest was just a high speed procession!

Are all "high end" cameras as waterproof as the next?

well, the canons can take a wee sprinkling, the nikons a good soaking...but yeah ;)

what about at 2:00 - that was an almighty splash to catch out the tog at the far end of the pool!!

no doubt he earned plenty of Euro's for the shots taken in the pool .....

1d cameras will take a bit of water I'm sure - Most of us are just too scared to try.

PS A 1d doesn't require a grip :)

Its the reality of how pro cameras are used, they are tools. They were only getting splashed, so all should be good.

To be honest if someone said to me i could get a unique photo that not one other photographer could get - by taking a photo in a swimming pool, then i would probably give it a go.

Its what means you don't end up with the same photo as the next 50 photographers.

And you dont get much closer to the action than in the same swimming pool as Mr Webber!

I had the exact same thoughts. I imagine the guy in the pool taking shots right in front of Webber will get paid the cost of his equipment several times over for those 5 minutes alone. Fair play to him for having the initiative to get stuck in!

I guess at that level you've got to treat your gear as if its disposable. Just one unique image could earn you thousands of pounds. If it means you gear gets trashed in the process so be it.

Ok so would you take your shirt off like the first guy seen or leave it on like the other guy?

Depends how expensive it was, I guess.

I received an email the other day to purchase a Limited Edition Hugo Boss McLaren Mercedes Team polo shirt the other day.

Looks like a bog standard polo shirt with a few embroidered logos (and a HB label) - £150 + p&p

I wouldn't even want to wear it, let along get it wet

Hi everyone, the reality of what happened was that the photographer without his shirt on managed to p*ss off every other photographer there by getting in the way of a great cele shot including mine. The snapper in question was working for Getty who also work for Red Bull and he is also a mate so he is kind of forgiven! Still annoying though. As for extra bucks - i doubt it, as they will just be filling their clients requirements.

To be honest sounds like great business sense. Shorting everyone else's photos so they get nothing useable, then getting a unique angle yourself.

Wont make many friends, but given the silly number of media theses days, you have to do something different.

He wouldn't have jumped in the pool with the intention of sabotaging other snappers shots. In the heat of the moment he just went for the best picture. If it was one of our teams in the pool then we probably would have done the same.

Is there a fair amount of cooperation between photographers in f1, or is it very dog eat dog? i'd be interested to hear what it's like working day to day, the random sort of stuff you don't get to hear about normally.

Yeah, i'd say its a bit of both too. Between the permanent pass holders there will be cooperation for most things.
For example, Getty would have told the whole photographers room that they'll be doing a team photo - they didn't have too - although most know there will usually be one.
First corner start stickers are allocated to the main agencies so they can reserve position on the start towers, and the same agencies are allowed to the front of the queue when waiting for the mad dash for a podium position (a lap before the end the photographers without pit wall tabards are released into the pit lane, if you happen to be sitting in the grandstand opposite, keep an eye out because its probably a more entertaining race for position!).

thanks for explaining! as soon as the race is done, i take it you're straight off to find a spot where you can sort through your images, is there pressure to get images in first over others? I the pool event was a great pr move from red bull!

Goood grief...Tommo with his top off in a swimming pool is not something I would EVER want to see.

I've been scarred.

Our desks in the photographers room are sorted out on the wednesday before the weekend. Our work is more team and sponsor related so speed is less crucial for us although we have websites that use us so we still aim to get things back quickly.
Another example of cooperation is at the start of the race where we will have wire tech/editor at the start to collect cards after a couple of laps, he will also collect cards for Getty and another agency, the Getty editor will be at another corner doing the same, so we help each other out. The wire agencies (AP, Reuters) often bring their laptops down and send from the corner.

Red Bull was built on PR - i mean who actually likes the stuff!

Seen that a few times between long haul races and yes you should be scared!

Is the guy with the shirt on Paul Gilham or have I just not seen Gilly for a while?!

It's cricket season again, so as soon as the internationals start we'll be seeing many a togs hairy chest...horrid stuff.

Is it just me or does this pool and the amount of people arround it seem too big to be on top of a motorhome, or am i not imagining the right size motorhome?

Yeah, guy with the shirt is Paul Gilham and the guy without shirt is Peter Fox.

If you look at Peter's website you can see the photos he got from the pool. Great shots.

Red Bull only extend their motorhome for Monaco, adding the pool and more decking. Its so big that its not even in the paddock.
