F1 new points system

It's a straight copy of the MotoGP points system. I've said since 2003 that the gap between first and second was never big enough, this should hopefully address the problem.

I like it, it puts an emphasis on actually winning or at least getting podium rather than accumulating consistent 5ths.

I don't think they listed it correctly though

6
5
3
2
1

ie, missing out 4? that doesn't tally.

Seems like a sensible change to me.

It creates a significant gap between first, second & third which gives the drivers an incentive to fight for the position, rather than just settle for the place they have. It also addresses the fact that there will be 26 cars on the grid next year so points will be paid further down the grid.

Win win tbh :)

Hmm, in hindsight I'm not entirely sure this makes a huge difference.

The difference between first and second is actually unchanged, just scaled.

8 is 80% of 10
20 is 80% of 25

The same applies to third, ie 60%.

Fourth works out fractionally worse, as does everything on down from there.

The only difference here will be that a driver who wins and then comes worse than 4th is fractionally worse off than before, but the top three positions actually make no difference.

In a way its like tennis, 15 30 40 could be changed to 1 2 3 with no detriment.

This system means you are slightly penalised for coming worse than 4th but still in the points, but it's fractions, less than a single point per position based on last years scale.

It would be good to get previous final standings from the last few years - translate them through the new points system and see what difference it makes ?

Remember the football - 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw before they increased a win to 3 points.

If I did it correct, last year's top 3 would have been..

Button - 230.5
Vettel - 203
Barichello - 183

percentage wise (for the top 3) it doesnt make any difference what so ever compared to the current system, the points gap may have widened but the actually weighting of points for those positions doesnt change.

cant see it making any difference apart from the fact that it will allow more people to score points and therefore by the end of the year its probably hoped that all teams will have scored atleast 1 point and be eligible for media monies.

but heyho atleast its not bernies medals system which would have ensured that we didnt have an interesting end to this years championship as jenson would have sealed that championship so early that we would have missed the opertunity to see meisers webber, vettel and barrichello trying as hard as possible to catch up.

As always joe seward explains all > http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/12/11/the-points-proposal/
