for xmas I have been given a 3 day pass for next years F1 GP. what do you guys recomend as the best lens for this? was thinking of maybe a 100-400 if one came up at the right price nearer the time. along with a x2 converter. or can you get close enough for my 70-200 to be effective.

Silverstone is right PITA for shooting, especially if you are behind the barriers (of which there are a lot at Silverston...). Were you thinking of using a 2x convertor on the 100-400?

I have used a 70-200mm f2.8 L with a 1.4x converter on a 1.6x crop camera at Silverstone and have had some good results, but next time I think ill be hiring/using a longer lens!

I would hire yourself a nice 300/400 from http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/

I think to be fair, its a disappointing present and if you wanted me to have it instead, then I suppose I would. You wouldn't have to pay me anything - it is christmas afterall:lol::lol::lol:

My pal always uses his D3 with a 300 prime and a 70-200 with a 1.7 converter. He's obviously Nikon and his images are be better by default anyway;)

Enjoy your pass -you lucky thing:thumbs:

cheers guys, I hope to have a x 2 converter by then so yes I will be using it , if funds dont allow then it will be either the 70-200 or maybe the 35-350 but I am not sure if it will be fast enough. also will take the 17-35 for some nice wide shots of the track maybe the start . not sure yet whether to use my 10d or 5d.

If you're going for the F1, how about scouting the place beforehand? There are plenty of events between now and then, and take gear which you htink you'll need, and then you can chop and change after the first visit.

Don't forget that F1 will be chokka, and you WILL NOT be able to get a decent togging spot unless you get there early, and don't move all day. There is only one place where you can get down to the track level with no barrier iirc, but that's ALWAYS full of toggers.

A 2x converter on a 100-400 doesn't sound a good idea to me.

so would my 70-200 with the converter on be a better choice ? or the 100-400 0n its own? both with either the 10D or 5D.
I will probly stay there over night kipping in the van so will be there early enough to bag a good spot I hope. I like the idea of going up before hand to fined the best spots and trying out whats best to take

AF won't work will it?

Access from the public areas isn't great, but a 300mm area lens is OK. With the 5D you can crop quite a lot. 100-400 is ideal range. I use a 100-300 f4 occassionally with a x1.4 tc for the shot down the start finish straight.

On race day you'll need to be in position by 9am for the race start early afternoon.

not sure on the AF, I hope to meet up with canon bob soon so will be able to try out and see, thanks for the advice I cant wait :woot:
