Great news, no more adverts and hopefully the commentators will realize it's not just the Lewis Hamilton show.

The BBC has secured the television rights to show Formula One in the UK from the 2009 season.

The five-year deal marks the return of the sport to BBC screens 12 years after ITV began broadcasting Grands Prix.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said: "I am delighted to conclude this new deal with the BBC.

"It is an exciting time in Formula One and the BBC has some innovative new ideas to consolidate and expand our UK fan base."

The deal covers all platforms and will see F1 broadcast on the BBC Sport website, as well as on TV and radio.

Brilliant. Be great not to have a ad break every 15 minutes.

That's fantastic news -- the worst thing to happen to happen to the F1 coverage was it to go to ITV. In fact, a guaranteed way to ruin a sports coverage is for it to go to ITV!!

Matt

How many times did the exciting action happen during the adverts !

For me the most important thing with this move to BBC is "The Chain"

Also, id like to see Martin Brundle keep his job as presenter and Pitlane walk about, ive meet him on both the last two David Coulthard supports club meetings (hes DCs manager) and hes a great bloke that has a genuine interest and knowledge of the sport, unlike Steve Ryder who seems to know nothing and just say the most obvious of comments.

Ahh such memories, be good to hear that themetune again:)

Agree about Brundle btw top bloke and from Norfolk too;)

keep brundle, get rid of James Allen. Ben Edwards please.

it seems like everyone is happy its going from ITV, but i think people are forgetting just how much better the ITV coverage was than the old BBC coverage. half the races werent even live.

But it all depends on who the BBC employs to do the production. If its the same company as ITV employs (Chrysalis?) then it'll just be pretty much the same anyway (without the adds, obv)

 I agree, the adverts were a small price to pay for infinitely improved coverage ITV have given us and I for one will be sad to see the relationship end [though if it puts J Allen out of a job, the sadness will be tempered with a little bit of a smile].

Of course, ringmaster Ecclestone will have it etched in stone that all the races MUST now be shown live and Aunty is promising web streaming stuff too. Frankly, I would like to see Ryder gone, maybe replaced with John Inverdale [much better eye candy and can talk intelligently too] and keep Brundle in the commentary box, everyone else not really bothered about.

i forgot to mention that they need some eye candy for LL :)
i'll add that to my open letter to Aunty Beeb :)

Whats strange though, is some reports are that BBC are taking it from ITV, and some say ITV dumped it. Seems strange that BBC would pay as much as ITV for it, so i guess ITV dumped it. My guess is Bernie ramped the price up because of the popularity of Lewis H. ITV said no, Bernie called their bluff and said he will sell it to the BBC.

Either way, the 'free to air' tag is slightly unfair, its OUR licence fee that will be paying for it :shake:

For once I find myself agreeing with Murray Walker - there is more to this than meets the eye. ITV's contact was set to run till end of 2009, but either they took, or were told, the end of 2008 termination was going to be used.

Talking as an ex-F1 cameraman.....

That is the whole reason it was moved to ITV in the first place.

Sorry, but that is just total rubbish. ALL of the races have always been live!

F1 races are covered by the host broadcaster for the country it is in, and BBC OBs have covered The British F1 for many, many years. During ITV's contract, they (ITV) have used BBC OBs to cover the British F1! Chrysalis are both an OB company and a Production Company and work closely with BBC and ITV.

ITV's coverage and BBC's coverage is excatly the same! Every race outside The British F1 will be covered by the host broadcaster of that country, no matter who broadcasts it in The UK, so there will be no difference. The only differences are: the location studio and one or two pit/paddock cameras. That's it!

The coverage of the actual race next year will be excatly the same as this years.

Also, to add: remember when it was on the BBC before, they used to show a re-run of the race on BBC2 at about 10pm on the Sunday, and not at the silly hour (after midnight often) ITV show it.

I thought I remember the BBC not showing quite a few races live, and just showing re-runs? Maybe not, I dunno. I also thought ITVs re-runs of early morning races were mid afternoon.

Anyway, will be insteresting to see what the coverage is like on BBC.

All races have always been live (in recent times, I'm not talking about the 1970's!)

Jumbo, I think you are confusing actual race coverage with the 'padding' as it were as far as BB's post is concerned. I think most fans are aware that lights to flag is covered by the host nation and your local TV company merely relays that feed, but the important part is the rest of it. The bits you refer to as 'The only differences are: the location studio and one or two pit/paddock cameras. That's it!' THATS the bit that makes a difference, that and the voice in the commentary box.

Oh and BBC did NOT always show it live, that was only in the last couple of years, there were delayed and late showings before that depending on what it clashed with and even at the end, quallies were often delayed coverage, if at all.

That doesn't mean I dont think the beeb will make a good fist of it, times have changed and things have moved on and in terms of what we actually get, it will more than likely remain very similar in appearance, but even taking recent BBC losses into account, look at cricket coverage, C4 and then Sky showed how well it could really be done - one just hopes the beeb has learned from their mistakes and puts on a damn good show!

But don't forget that in the past, it was a part of Grandstand and allowed 1hr 45mins. If it over ran and the cricket or snooker followed, then you ended up watching cricket or snooker.
Let's hope they've learned.
I look forwards to losing the ads, but ITV still presents a decent coverage where you can be sure to see the end of the race.

unless i'm completely insane, or my brain is even more screwed than i thought it was i gotta say you are 100% completely and utterly wrong!

lots of the non european races werent live, and the french GP normally clashed with Wimbledon Mens Finals and got the boot too.

I'm not talking the 70's either as i was between 0 and 7 years old during the 70's

and in recent times the BBC hasnt shown any races, let alone live ones.

At my age I`ll miss the adverts and will need to buy a urinal bottle !!!!

great news! cant wait to rock out to the chain at about 3am watching the oz coverage next year!!!!! :D

so thats rallying and F1 that itv have got rid of in 12 months.

bbc didnt always show all races live and in their entirity as badgerbaiter says, but im sure that they will make a good job of the new coverage :)

no james allen, retain martin brundell, mark blundell and possibly louise goodman and get in someone like ben edwards whos a damn good commentator who doesnt dribble inane rubbish like james allen

nah, say good bye to blundell and goodman. even john goodman is better looking than her :)
although she has got better. i remember when her interviews all started 'how was it out there?'

Woohoo, I'm majorly looking forward to this! To be fair though, I feel ITV have done a pretty good job of it so far.

i hope the beed do the sorts of indepth stuff that itv have done, if they dont i will be disappointed, expect to see racing on bbc4

I would like to apologise about parts of my posts back there. I typed without engaging brain.

I worked on 36 F1s between 1996 and 1999 and I *assumed* certain things about the BBC coverage, so: sorry. I spent a lot of time on location and rarely watched the F1 on the box afterwards because, franky, after seeing shiney cars go round and round for three days almost continuously (and working on BTCC on the weekends inbetween) you tend not to watch any of the coverage on your days off.

:bonk: takes foot out of mouth and slinks off into a corner :bonk:

I find Ben Edwards BTCC commentaries a bit lacking in excitement, so I wouldn't wantg him commentating on F1. Charlie Cox would be so much better, great commentary and great one liners.

yup, welcome

apologies always are a good way to gain respect

 havent seen it yet, its the only one I have missed so far, but its still sat on the sky box awaiting my undivided ;)

However, on the F1 thing, this quote from BBC chappie Coles, shamelessly nicked from a full article on Autosport...

Coles has also said that the success of BBC's revamped Top Gear programme will be a major influence on the tone of their F1 coverage in 2009

 so, let me see...Clarkson in the commentary box with Brundle, Hammond as pitlane reporter and May as ...well...teaboy! :D

Richard Hammond presenting maybe............as long as he ain`t driving I guess
