Lance to FI a done deal For next year surely now?
Hell I’d get rid of him before Belgium and put Kubica in

I guess the accountants at Williams are worried, both Strolls money going and the Martini sponsorship going. Its going to leave them with problems for next year.

Sky News reporting it now.

Fernando Alonso has retired from Formula 1 and will quit McLaren at the end of the season.

Despite being considered to be one of the best drivers to ever grace an F1 cockpit, the 37-year-old has not won an F1 race in five years and the Drivers' World Championship in over a decade.

The two-time world champion is to make a full-time switch to the Indy Car series.

The Spanish press were claiming yesterday that Kimi is about to sign a new deal at Ferrari.

I really hope Alonso moves to IndyCar. He’s far too good not to be racing.

He's got the WEC season to finish, that runs until next June so he's still be on track next year. Speaking of which, I'll be at Silverstone on Sunday, so I'll see him racing, then I'll see him racing again a fortnight later somewhere quite a way from Silverstone ...

Gasly confirmed as Verstappen’s teammate at Red Bull next season

Yes, just saw the article.

Red Bull has announced that Pierre Gasly will join the team from the beginning of the 2019 season, to race alongside Max Verstappen.

Gasly, who had his first competitive taste of Formula One last year, joining sister team Toro Rosso from the Malaysian Grand Prix, has had an impressive first full season in the sport this year, notably driving superbly to finish fourth at the Bahrain Grand Prix and notching two further top ten finishes in the first half of the season.

Facts from the last race
Lewis Hamilton already held the record for most Formula 1 victories in the Hungarian Grand Prix, so his 67th career victory, and sixth at the Hungaroring, served only to increase his record.

It was the 81st victory for Mercedes, which is now tied with Lotus for fourth-place on the list of most wins by team.

Hamilton took his sixth pole position at the Hungaroring, which leaves him one shy of Michael Schumacher’s record seven pole positions at the track.

The reigning world champion’s fifth win of the season means he goes into the summer break with a 24-point lead, which is the highest any driver has managed all season. But it’s a sign of how much closer this year’s title fight is than recent seasons that Hamilton’s tally of 213 points after 12 races is the lowest for a championship leader since 2012, when Fernando Alonso had 164 points after the first dozen rounds.

With 225 points available from the remaining nine rounds, the title can still be won by any driver in the field, including the point-less Sergey Sirotkin.

Sebastian Vettel had to settle for second place. This was his 106th podium finish, which means he is now level with Alain Prost in terms of both podiums, race wins (51) and world championships (four). Vettel’s 210 starts is 11 more than Prost made in his career.

Kimi Raikkonen started third and finished third for the third race in a row. Since his last win in the 2013 Australian Grand Prix he has now appeared on the podium 30 times – 14 more than the next-longest such streak.

In a similar vein, it’s now more than two years since Raikkonen failed to reach Q3 in a qualifying session, but he’s only taken one pole position during that time.

At a circuit where overtaking is notoriously tough, Daniel Ricciardo did well to climb from 12th on the grid to finish fourth. Nigel Mansell memorably won the 1989 Hungarian Grand Prix from that starting position and in 1994 Jos Verstappen, father of Ricciardo’s team mate Max, bagged his first podium finish from 12th.

There were no points for the younger Verstappen. Both Red Bull drivers have failed to score in four of the opening 12 races, which has wrecked their chances of getting into the championship fight.

Ricciardo also claimed the fastest lap of the race. This was the 13th of his career, putting him level with Jacky Ickx, Alan Jones and Riccardo Patrese. Red Bull have set the fastest lap in half of this year’s races so far.

McLaren had finished ‘best of the rest’ behind Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull at the Hungaroring for the last three years in a row, but it was Toro Rosso’s turn this year. Sixth place for Pierre Gasly is their second-best result at this track after Verstappen’s fourth place in 2015.

Finally, Marcus Ericsson managed to out-qualify Charles Leclerc for the first time in nine races. But Stoffel Vandoorne remains yet to out-qualifying Fernando Alonso, and gearbox failure snatched away his shot at a first points finish since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in April.

My two favourite circuits on the calendar coming up over the next two weekends :D.

Turn 9 on the map above, aka "the corner with no name", is apparently being called Jacky Ickx corner from this year.

Force India are allowed to race at Spa as the Racing Point Force India Team

Facts from the last race
Sebastian Vettel became the third-most successful driver of all time in terms of wins with his victory in Belgium.

It was the 52nd victory of his career, one more than Alain Prost, who scored his final win in the 1993 German Grand Prix. Only Michael Schumacher (91) and Lewis Hamilton (67 and counting) lie ahead.

This was Vettel’s third win at Spa. It was also the second time this year he’s led every lap, something Hamilton hasn’t done, but which Daniel Ricciardo also managed in Monaco.

For the third race weekend in a row Ferrari set the outright fastest lap time during the weekend (as they did from Bahrain to Azerbaijan earlier this year), though as in Hungary they were beaten to pole position by Mercedes in wet conditions. Ferrari led all three practice sessions and the first two stages of qualifying before the rain came down.

Lewis Hamilton’s fifth Belgian Grand Prix pole position is a record, beating the previous tally of four he shared with Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Juan Manuel Fangio. It was also the sixth consecutive pole position for Mercedes at Spa.

There are only two instances of the same constructor taking more consecutive pole positions at the same venue: Ferrari had seven at Suzuka from 1998 to 2004, and Williams did the same at Silverstone from 1991-97. Mercedes could also take its fifth consecutive pole position at Monza this weekend.

While the leading pair were able to ease off in the closing stages Valtteri Bottas, who climbed up from 17th to finish fourth, set the fastest lap of the race. It was the seventh of his career, the same number as Jacques Laffite.

Vettel and Hamilton have won five races apiece so far this year but neither of their team mates have taken a win yet. With 200 points available, Kimi Raikkonen is 85 points off the lead and Bottas is 87 behind. No wonder we’re starting to hear talk of team orders under consideration.

Force India found themselves in the strange position of having to start again from zero at the middle of the season following their return from administration during the summer break. The FIA’s official points table now contains two Force Indias: ‘Racing Point’ has 18 points and is ninth, while predecessors Sahara have been reduced from 59 to zero and are 11th.

Max Verstappen matched his father’s achievement from 24 years earlier by finishing third at Spa. That has moved him ahead of team mate Daniel Ricciardo in the championship for the first time this year, in the first race since Ricciardo confirmed his impending departure from Red Bull.

As of the last race the bottom eight drivers in the championship standings are mathematically out of contention. They include Sergey Sirotkin who, though still without a point, scored the best result of his career so far at Spa with 12th.

While Sirotkin’s team mate Lance Stroll is widely expected to become a Force India driver sooner or later, it bears pointing out Sirotkin is 7-5 up against his team mate in qualifying and only 5-4 down on race finishes – a fair start for the rookie.

Grosjean has been disqualified (from 6th)

Grosjean disqualified from sixth place after Renault protest

Romain Grosjean has been disqualified from sixth place in the Italian Grand Prix after a successful protest of the legality of the Haas car by Renault.

Renault claimed the front edge of the floor of Grosjean’s car was not in conformity with the regulations after the race at Monza, with the Frenchman’s result having initially seen Haas move into fourth in the constructors’ championship ahead of Renault. After a hearing by the stewards, the protest was upheld and Grosjean disqualified.

The protest related to the front edge of the floor. With a number of teams having been interpreting a technical regulation in different ways, the FIA issued a technical directive on July 25 which “in essence gave the teams until the to comply with the clarification indicated.”

Anyone know what happened to Seb's apparent unsafe release from his first lap pit stop? Ted called it on Sky commentary, but nothing seemed to happen.

There was some footage on Twitter but as he cut up a sauber and I don’t think they complained and nothing came of it, even if it is penalised, it’ll probably be a fine anyway and shouldn’t affect the result

And vandoorne is out! Finally, put Norris in, a young team, cheaper driver wages and they can afford some upgrades haha

Enjoyed the racing but still think what passes for a strategy dept. in Mercedes need their backsides felt!

Leaving Lewis out for far too long when in could have been in and out in the lead.

IIRC Kimi was slow at start of his first lap out so looked like Lewis was going to create a bigger gap, then the rain started to fall slightly so they held for another lap or two, then Ricciardo broke down and they had to wait to see if a safety car.

I don’t remember LH ever having a full pit stop over Kimi, it was around 24 seconds needed and he never got to more than 22 iirc.
