Just working on the Colour project for the TAOP course and as such, looking more closely at f-stops.

I have an f-stop chart which shows the, the correct adjustments at full stops, half stops and 1/3rd stops which is great.

So, how come i have some photos with an f-stop that isn't on the list? f5.3 is baffling me, it doesn't seem to be anywhere, is my camera setting more sensitive than the list?

are you sure you're no misreading the display - i'd expect it to be either f5.6 or f6.3

can you post an image with EXIF ???

Im confused

Les :D

Is this from dslr or compact?

Yes, you can get that, but only at lowest f/number with something like the kit lens that, in theory, has a variable f/number as the lens zooms. It's just an inbetween setting.

Thanks, just had me confused a little. Not a kit lens, the tamron 18-270 DII

I think you've got auto-ISO set on your camera ... I've seen this on other Nikon bodies in the past :D

Confused the hell out of me - not difficult to do - the first time too :help:

EDIT: I just had a look in Thom Hogan's D300 manual and it makes a comment in there that when auto-ISO is set the camera uses 1/6 stop increments :D

The f number is the ratio between focal length and aperture. It can be any value.

It may be true that it can be any value, but AFAIK you can only manually set whole, half or third stops. Certainly that's true with Nikon bodies.

Depends on the lens. At work some of my lenses can be set to any F stop between 2 and 64.

HoppyUK already explained how it is possible to get f/5.3 with a variable aperture zoom in post #6.

If you zoom out to say 18mm and set an aperture of f/3.5, then as you zoom in the aperture will close down and one of the values will be f/5.3.

On the Nikon D50 with a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 this occurs at about 45mm.

I didn't argue that you can't set any f-stop, my comment was that (on Nikon bodies at least) you can only manually set (i.e. dial in via the command wheels) either whole, half or third stops.

You can't, for example, manually set f/6.1 via the controls on the camera.

Maybe I shouldn't have bothered?
