Eyes sparkle in PSE 8. Please help.

I am going crazy here guys lol.

Using instruction from tutorial I am watching on Dvd (Made for PSE 6) this is what I have done so far.

Select the Polygonal lasso tool.

Select "Add to selection" tab on the top left had corner.

In the "Feather box" change to 2 or 3 pixels

Using the Polygonal lasso tool, select the part of the eyes needed.


Now this is where it gets funny.


I am supposed to press CTRL and J so as to punch the selection into a new layer. But then it says "Could not make a new layer from selection because no pixels are selected"

Anyone care to bail me out here as both eyes are selected and I have done all of the above. What is missing please?:help::help::help:
 
Have you got any other layers open? Make sure that your active layer isn't an adjustment layer such as levels etc.

I think its because it only a small area, look along the top under the main menu bar, for Feather is it already set to Feather, 10px or whatever, it should be 0 px then try doing it without the feather, if it doesnt work, your selection is to small

Kinda make sense, so which layer do I select? The main one, I.e one used as back ground?
