Which Canon EOS camera has the eye controlled focus??

And was it really so bad they discontinued with it??

I remember using one once and thought it was great!! You just dont see them anymore.. and i cant remember the model number of it..

Im not sure if this belongs in the film section or not.. its not about film exactly..

As far as I know the EOS 3 & EOS 30 (I still use the 30 for B&W) *EDIT* EOS 5 as well apparantly heh :)

I couldn't get used to it myself. It gave me eye ache when I used it, because you had to really look (if you get my meaning!) at one of the focus points and because I wear glasses it made it quite difficult! I only ever use the centre focus point now anyway on the 30 and my 40D so even if it was still around , I don't think I would have it activated.

Was it the EOS 30 your thinking of?

At least im not the only one thats come accross it.. i thought it may have been a flash in the pan thing..

It belonged to my brother in law and he set it up for me.. it was quite tricky if i remember rightly..

I was just wondering if it was worth getting one off ebay.. i was thinking about getting an EOS 1v/n whichever i can find.. I WAS looking at going for a Mf camera but i like the idea of getting a good 35mm..

So, did everyone have problems with the eye control??

My 50e has it and it still works perfectly and is probably the one thing canon should bring back IMHO. The best bit is you can look up to an area in the top corner of the viewfinder and it gives you an DOF preview, I do miss that on the digital cameras having to find the little button to press it is a pain.

I have it on my EOS 5 with the VG10 grip attached to it. My son has started to use it now. I wear glasses and was able to use the eye control with no problems...I wish Canon had used it on some of the newer cameras.

i've heard of the eye control, but how does it work?

Personally I'd recommend a medium format as a film camera. The EOS 30 only had 5 point I recall. I know when I went to the 20D there were more points on that. The lack of eye control was not missed. If it was any good, I would have thought canon would have kept it on their newer cameras.

I've got it on my Eos 5, but I've never got it to work, with or without glasses...

EOS 5 was the first wasn't it? Mind you, didn't Minolta pioneer eye-start tech on their first AF cameras?

my eos 50e has it ..
works well, so long as you have the manual to calibrate it to your eyeball
dunno why canon dropped it, twas a cracking feature imo, especially the dof preview in the corner, saved fumbling for the preview button

I always got on very well with it on both my EOS 5 and 3. Loved the DOF preview facility as well. In some respects I prefer the eye control as sometimes the camera chooses the wrong focusing point and it takes time to change it manually. Mine both worked with me wearing sunglasses too! Sadly yet to appear on a DSLR body but they must be running out of things to put in them so maybe the EOS 50D? will have it. They'd never sell it in a 1D body though. Lets not forget though that you can switch it off so you didn;t have to use it if you didn't get on with it.

Incidentially the EOS 50e was the first with eye control followed by the EOS 5.

By the sounds of it the eye start minolta/sony have is something different. All that does AFAIK is focus the lens to whichever focus point you have set when the camera is lifted to your face. The canon systems sound like it detects where you are looking and focuses on that point. I may be miles off with that guess though.

The Canon system (well at least the one on my Eos 5 anyway) chooses between the 5 focus points available.

If anyone knows where I can get a manual for it that would be very useful as I've got no idea how to calibrate it etc...

Not sure where you get that from. It works in exactly the same way as when you half press the shutter button.

Canon eye focus

From Sony

"Eye-Start Autofocus System
It begins precision autofocus adjustments the moment you raise the camera to your eye -- so unlike some DSLR cameras that don’t start focusing until the shutter button is half-pressed, the Sony DSLR-A300 never slows down your ability to catch fast action.
"

Like I said, the canon one focuses where your eye is looking, the Sony one focuses where you've preivously told it to.

Sorry, don't get that. Where does "where you've prevously told it to" come into it?

Eye control was one of the reasons I got an eos 3...works a treat for me. I find it was much faster than scrolling through dozens of AF points as you could go straight to the one you wanted if you could work it. These days I reckon Canon call some AF points AF assists points that you can't select as a workaround for trying to speed up the scrolling through AF points.

Does anybody here know if there was a camera with eye control AF and dioptre adjust? If there isn't maybe more folk want dioptre adjust???

To calibrate switch dial to "Cal" A focus point will light up and flash. Look at this focus point and press the shutter half way, repeat with the next flashing point. When done any points will stop flashing and you can move the dial to P or whatever. Try and calibrate in several different situations like sun behind, inside, outside etc as it learns you see.

Good luck

Hi Andrew

Once again, the Sony Alphas have both Eye Control AF and Diopter Adjust. Thinking of switching??;)

Howdy Marc:wave:

I'll consider switching if Sony make a rival for the Canon MP-E 65mm;). I don't really use AF for much these days so it doesn't really make much odds to me.
