Has anyone else got any issues and hopefully a solution for an extremely slow time machine?

The drive is 1TB WD my studio over FW800, so that shouldn't be an issue. I can copy files fairly quickly.

On MBP with 10.6 it used to be painful, literally. On a new mac mini 10.8.2 I am getting kilobytes per second, slow a snail, and HDD makes a hell lot of noise. I can't let it go on like that any longer. :gag::shake:

if the disk is making a lot of noise like its flicking around all over the disk it could be maybe its defragmented or the controller on the hard drive is receiving odd instructions.

I'm not sure what I can do about that. There is no defrag for macs as far as I know.

I think it could be time for 3GB USB3 drive anyway as that one is close to full

If the drive is making alot of noise, its on its way out, hence the slow read/write times.

Replace the drive.

I have a feeling 10.8 actually idles TM if anything else is used (a sensible thing) which is probably why it can be dead slow at times. Tonight it was quite OK; 22GB in 4-5 min. The thing does it RAM like mad, 16GB gone in minutes, and then wouldn't release it automatically.
