I am off to yellowstone end of Janaury for 2 weeks. Temperatures could be, especially in the Lamar valley, around minus 30! I am trying to source good quality winterboots but struggling to find any good shop either outlet or online.

Anyone has any suggestions?

many thanks

Some good suggestions there as well...

If you have time, I'd wait til you get there and find a local outdoor shop. If anyone knows the right kit for local conditions, it's a local retailer.
You don't have time to buy new and have them fully broken-in in any case.
They'll also be a lot cheaper in the US...

I would get something fur lined or insulated. It will make a big difference to your comfort. I've got a pair of furry winter boots I bought in Eastern Europe and they are just amazingly warm.

As Rob said, I would also recommend buying boots as soon as you arrive. UK shops don't really cater for extreme weather.

Sorel make boots that are supposed to be rated to -40, ive got a pair of Sorel Caribou that i wore in Norway in -27 and only had a single pair of normal socks on in them and never had trouble with cold feet, even sat in a hide for 7 hours ! They are made in the US or Canada, so should be easy to pick up, specially around Yellowstone !

I've got a pair of Sorel's with removable felt liners that I've used at -40.

If the felt liners get damp/wet they can be removed and dried out overnight.

There's a few brands/types of boots available with removable liners including Wellington style boots (known as rubber boots or rubbers in Canada).

I spent a winter in Canada where it dropped to -45. I turned up completely unprepared and went to wal-mart where I found a pair of boots on sale for about $30. They had a thinsulate lining and are super warm so it could be worth gambling on waiting until you get there. The brand had the humorous name of B.U.M. Equipment, lol.

i am in the Rokies at the minute and bought a pair of sorel snow boots, they are very comfi and warm, the coldest I had so far was -28 and no problems. Don't buy boots with a fur linen, they trap moisture and your feet get cold. You will aslo need very warm socks. Finally you must wear thermal base layers, icebreaker (200/260) are not cheap but are probably the best on the market. Check this site www.purekit.com. Heading to Whitehorse tomorrow for a 3 days dog sleigh trip in the wilderness!!!

Hi Ian

Do you have a link to the boots you bought? I'm going to be doing the same Norway trip as you next year and have been looking for some suitable boots for cold weather for a while

Cheers

Andy

Depending on where you land it might be worth finding a branch of REI. They have a massive selection of mountaineering kit which is designed for the local conditions, which are colder than those found in the UK winter. They also have a fantastic no question guarantee, so if you change your mind youj can just take the stuff back.

Depends on what the use will be... For general walking about in snow, with snow-shoes, etc, I have a pair of pumas, fur lined and waterproof (I have walked through a flooded car park in them and no leaking... also been to -18 at the WRC in Sweden and they are great)!! I bought these in Austria, in a little ski shop.

If hiking and crampons are required.... I use these:

B3 rated, firm sole suitable for C3 crampons, built-in waterproof gator, awesome piece of kit!!
