Hello

Rather 'off topic' I know but I had my wisdom teeth removed (two lower) three days ago under general. One side seems to be healing nicely and only hurting a small amount but the other side is hurting more than I can even describe.

The blood clot keeps coming away and reforming and I have got a pain right down my jaw and up into my head. Its been three days since the procedure and the hospital say its normal for pain.

I have woken up the last 2 nights in the early hours in so much pain that I couldnt move my head, I had to crush two co-codamol tablets into water and wait till the pain subsided before I could sleep again

Has anyone had any experience with this?

I had a similar thing a few years back when they removed a wisdom tooth.
Hurt like hell, finally went back to the dentist and apparently the bone was
exposed. They put some gauze stuff on it and the pain went like they'd thrown
a switch.

Have they had a look or have you just spoken to them on the phone?. You
should get someone to look at it...

.

Many years ago had all four taken out in hospital. Friends came to visit and walked straight past me - didn't recognise me as my face was so swollen.

If I remember correctly it was a week before I could eat properly. Very painful - you have my sympathy.

I was told to wash mouth out with salt water on a regular basis. Not to swish it around too much, so as not to disturb clotting. I think it helped the healing. Salt is an antiseptic.

Hope it improves soon.

Same thing happened to me, but not with wisdom teeth. The gauze stuff tasted absolutely horrible though, like drinking jeyes fluid, but its better than the pain i suppose.

Yeah, they call it a dry socket, essentially it's an infection. Common if you smoke, drink pop from a bottle or can, or do other things the dentist tells you not to do within a few hours of extraction (the sucking action without pressure equalisation basically rips the clot out of the socket exposing nerves, bone or whatever).

I ended up having to go to the emergency dentist as it was out of my dentist's hours, and she prescribed painkillers for the pain and antibiotics for the infection.

And remember, when they ask, on a scale of 1-10 the pain is always an 11. :)

Oh man up!!!!
Just press a FF camera to the side that hurts, the pain will go away as if by magic. :)

Yeah, they call it a dry socket, :)

It sounds exactly like that - I've had it a couple of times, and the only relief I got (before going back to the dentist) was from taking soluble co-codamol, as it seems to get to work right away.

Get yourself back to the dentist asap - one of mine lasted days before I gave up and went back, not nice.

co-codamol, as it seems to get to work right away.

Good stuff that co-codamol. I have 128 of them left now (500mg ones too, the good stuff!) between what my doctor and the hospital gave me yesterday for a non-tooth related pain issue. :)

House's pain medication of choice too (in the US they call it Vicodin), although as he demonstrates it can be addictive (codeine is a narcotic), so only take it when you're actually in pain.

Does sound like a dry socket. I'm afraid it can take a long time to heal, as the other say get back to a dentist, you may need antimicrobials and using Corsodyl ( or any generic Chlorohexidine)mouthwash (not the daily rinse , but the full strength) for a week is helpful to reduce the chance of secondary infections slowing the healing process, but don't use it for longer as it causes staining and use it after brushing you teeth, not before. By the way, I am a dentist.

Good luck

Had dry socket a few weeks ago, really painful. Oil of cloves watered down and placed in the socket on some gauze gave some welcome temporary relief.

Get back to the dentist and get it packed, instant relief.

I was going to suggest clove oil as well - did great things for me when I had a abscess and tooth taken out because of it. Be warned - it tastes and smells pretty bad but it was worth it.

Thanks guys, the blood clot keeps reforming and then coming away agin

Got a dentist appt for 2:15 tomorrow afternoon.......£17.50 later and il have some more drugs!!

You have an infection

Get back to your dentists for a course of antibiotics ASAP

Had all my (remaining) teeth out and wallies in in one go under local anaesthetic about 16 years ago, due to gum problems. Now that was painful. Had a similar issue to this having had an eye tooth out some years previously. My face swelled so badly I looked like the elephant man, and that one tooth was worse than getting the rest out all at once.. Bloody agony, you have my sympathy.

Had 3 wisdom teeth and one tooth (top back left) taken out a few weeks ago. I was given pink tablets to drink whenever I was in pain. The only annoying thing is that I dont like food getting into the holes. The gums have all healed now.

My wife says you should try childbirth!
