My third portable drive has just crashed. It's not the electronics it's the drive itself It must be something I'm doing :) .

I've decided that an SSD might be the best option. I just wonder if anyone has used an external SSD and what they thought of it.

I'll be using it with a MacBook Pro so USB or Thunderbolt connection

whacking it on something in transit would be favourite I'd imagine - closely followed by spilling tea on it, overheating by covering it with a load of crap on the desk, and exposing it to a strong magnet by keeping it on top of the PC speakers ;)
 
Drives looked after very well. Nice and cosy in a padded laptop bag. Coffee never near them. Previous drive to go down was a "rugged" version. Fairly annoying as this was the back up drive. Anyway a SSD should be a bit more rugged.

peters mart. Thanks for the link. It looks like this might be the cheaper option having looked at some of the other drive options available. Out of interest what SSD are you using

Mixture of Samsungs - 830 in the core2 Quad and the others are 840 EVO.

Never had any problems with HDDs or SSDs - except once when lightning struck the house and some 3 pin plug sockets exploded - but even then I was able to recover all the data off it after an overnight sojourn in the freezer!

The external SSDs simply plug in - no PSU needed but my HDDs are all powered through Surge Protected mains supply.

I presently use a Samsung 1TB 840 EVO in an IcyBox caddy as a travel backup drive.

I’ve been considering a couple of these Angelbird external SSDs for a while as I’d prefer something a bit more bulletproof personally. They look perfect, some even have a built in UPS - A bit pricey though! Angelbird recently released the SSD2go “pocket” which is a bit more reasonably priced.

Originally when I bought the EVO, it was actually destined to replace the Crucial C300's in my workstation, but I took so long to be bothered to fit it, that I opted for a 850 PRO in the advent of the "read speed degradation issue" with the EVOs. So I’ve been using the EVO as an external drive and so far it’s been very solid. However I wouldn’t necessarily recommend buying EVO drives until the speed degradation issue is clarified/fixed. I hope it’s fix-able through firmware and not a more serious problem relating to TLC.

But yeah if implemented correctly external SSDs should be considerably more robust than HDDs.
