recommendations required for an external monitor to use with my laptop....

Hmm, might be easier to assist if we knew what lapop you're using, what outputs it has to drive a monitor and what screen resolution you're running :)

have a vaio with a normal monitor output and a hdmi. running an i7, with a 2gb graphics card, the laptop itself has a hd screen running 1080p.

budget up to about £350.

Is it good Neil, or should I be looking to spend a bit more?

I've got a Dell U2410 and can recommend. The IPS panel was a nice step up from my previous 24" Samsung monitor with a TN panel. I've not put the two side by side to compare colour (although IPS theoretically should be better than TN panels) some things about it obviously better like the far wider viewing angle). It also looks nicer in terms of the case (my opinion only of course), and has a decent stand. I paid about £400 about a year ago from pcbuyit but it looks like it is available for around £340 now.

about to go for the dell u2410 however, came across the u2711 on nrgit.biz at a good price and was wondering if my laptops graphic card which is a nvidia GT 540M (2GB) be able to run this monitor? can anybody advise?

I agree with Neil. For that budget, the U2410 is hard to beat. Proper 16:10 ratio, 1920x1200, decent LG IPS panel, great connectivity, and if you have no calibrator, comes fairly decently set up too.

My only complaint is the anti-glare coating is a bit aggressive, and can appear to "sparkle" in bright areas as you move your head around. A small price to pay for a great screen though.

got a Dell U2410 very happy and nice to work off a big screen. Thank you for the advice and recommendations.
