Hi all, i have started using video more on my Canon 7D now because of my new job. Just wondered what a good external mic would be? I was about to go for the Rode Videomic but then realised as it was a directional mic it wouldn't be great for motorsport as that is what it will be used for. Anyone recommend a decent priced mic? Cheers

The Rode Videomic would actually be fine for motorsport. If you are in a very wide still shot, it will pick up the sound in the respective channels just fine. Whilst it is directional, it's not like a laser. It can pick up very high quality ambient sound quite well

Very pleased to hear this, think ill go with that. Ill be using it with a 50mm prime mostly so Hopefully be ok. Has to be better than the standard, last lot of videos were ruined by massive wind noise.

Just do a youtube search for what you are using and what you want to use it with. So put in, Canon 7D rode video mic.

Infact, I just did. Here's a video using exactly your future set up.

Linky linky.

Get a Dead Cat muff to help with wind noise. Won't stop very strong wind but will help.
You might want to consider the Stereo version as well as the mono.

I've been looking at the Rode Videomic Pro because it has a built in +20db amp which apparently helps remove some of the camera hiss. Not sure its any good on a 7D without magic lantern though, can you turn agc off on the 7D?

IIRC, the gain control in the 7D is awesome. So you not only get fantastic control over volumes, but there may (or may not) be a whole menu section dedicated to sound control. I would go as far as saying you could have manual gain control S.O.O.C.

The sound control on the 7D according to the manual is automatic so you have problems with the AGC with sudden transients and long low level recording. The +20dB boost may help with any system noise.

Now for some recordings, this may not represent any problems, if it does consider recording to an external device such as a Zoom H1. You could then take the output from this recorder into the camera and sync up in Post. This how I operate with the 5Dlll, but that has the advantage of manual audio controls so I can send a fairly "hot" signal to the 5D which gives a much better result straight from the camera .

If you update the firmware to the latest version you will be able to set the audio recording levels before you start recording.

I used to use a Rode Video Mic for on-camera sound, with wired lapel miss for when I wanted less ambient (i.e someone talking to camera).

This weekend I've been playing with these: http://store.sony.com/p/ECM-AW3/en/p/ECMAW3

Absolutely brilliant. Used them on a Sony handicam and a Nikon D7000 and the sound is bang-on. Plug in, they pair up wirelessly via Bluetooth and if positioned correctly on clothing, there's very little wind noise.
