Hi all.

I'm looking for a decent quality external mic to use with the 5D mark II.

I need it to record such sounds as Rain, Lighting, Motorsports and general ambience.

anyone got any suggestions where I might look?

Hi Cezare,
I may be new to DSLR's but mic's are something I know well. For ambient noise you may need a mic running through a preamp, this depends on how much power the canon is supplying through the mini jack, which you should be able to find through your manual.
A few really good choices in small mics can be found by googling giant squid audio, church audio, or sound professionals.
I have used mic's from giant squid and Church audio with great success, both are one man operations who build all their own equipment. Sound professionals are an on line store who also do their own mics, I haven't brought mics from them but they come highly recommended.
http://www.taperssection.com/ is a great forum for audio info, they have a section on photo, video audio recording so would be a good place for more info.

Cheers,

Ed
