Hi there.

I have a relatively old Maxtor 40gig hdd (3000le) which i have not used for a while.

Went to use it today and it's not working.

Plug it into the usb port, computer beeps and it shows up in device manager .. but nothing else. Unable to access it under my computer.

Also, the read/write led is permanently on !!!

Any offers ??

Cheers.

Anth.

Ps - have tried it on 2 diff computers with the same results.

Hi mate.

No - no drive letter shows up under my computer - you can't see it.

Under control panel - device manager, it recognises it as a disk drive, with the name etc - but does not assign a drive letter under my computer.

What powers the HDD? Is it the USB port, cos some of them are underpowered and won't pick up the drive (although the drive will spin and make noises).

Can you use Disk Manager ? Does it recognise it as a drive there?

Right Click My Computer and Select Manage

Disk Manager will be on the left hand pane. Open it up and see if the HDD is recognised there. If it is, you can right click the volume and assign a drive letter.

Just give it a bloody good smack. It'll be fine, I'm sure.:exit:

Hi again.

Still no joy.

The drive is powered externally - that's working fine - green light.

It does not show up under disk manager. It does still show up under control panel - system - hardware - device manager.

Not happy :(

Thanks for the help guys - any more ideas greatly appreciated!!

Cheers.

As odd as this may see have you removed drive from caddy and tried it in computer. I have one that spins up fine externally but can't be seen yet connect it up as an internal slave and it's fine, go figure.

An update ....

Have now (with the help of an old hunting knife and a screwdriver) removed the HDD from the caddy.

Will try it directly in the computer this week.

Cheers

Anth.
