I'm looking to buying an external HD for my pictures and video files.

Do those of you with the external hard drives just drag & drop or is anyone using back up software?

Personally I use Robocopy (think of it as XCOPY on steroids) to clone the appropriate directories. If I wasn't using Robocopy, I'd be dragging and dropping.

Copy and paste is fine until something interrupts it - then you have to answer all the overwrite/ skip etc queries when you try again.

I use MS synctoy but there are plenty of other options too. Not had synctoy interrupted while copying yet but if I did, I know it would just identify what wasn't copied and get on with it next time.

+1 for MS SyncToy - I use it to take multiple backups and leave it running overnight with no issues/interruptions
