I’m currently using a 1tb LaCie rugged drive via thunderbolt. It’s fine, but it’s very bulky and the thunderbolt port is very loose. One small move and it can disconnect the drive. Not very helpful when transferring Files. I also use this for my time machine backups, but again, placing the laptop down can dislodge the drive and miss the backup..I’ve lost about 4 days of files because of this, I had an issue that I had to go back and then realised I’d missed several days of time machine.

Im after something a bit more lightweight, possibly something I can Velcro onto the outside of the lid when in use. I tend to edit all my photos on the sofa with the MacBook so I have no desk to put a drive on.

500gb-1tb is fine, thunderbolt or usb. The macbook is a 2015 15inch, not sure if it’s usb 3 or not.

As a side note, any web based or network drives aren't viable. 2mb download and 0.2 upload speeds put pay to that.

Any recommendations?

LaCie Rugged are my go to recommendation, G Technology drives look smaller though.

I have a lacie rugged.. Its too bulky as per my post.

I presume a NAS setup is independent to the internet, as like I say, our internet is too slow to be useable for large file uploads.
I guess I would have to create a LAN. Ive done it all before Im sure, but I have a stinking cold and my head isn't working right today.

USB3 or USB-C 2"5 external HDDs 4GB or more from WD for storage and larger archives

1TB or 2TB external SSD USB3/C for general work, particularly where speed is important.

I guess I would have to create a LAN

If you connect everything by net cable you will be OK, wifi will slow things down a bit

Pre-formatted for Macs.

It takes < 1min . I wouldn't pay 1p extra for that.

LaCie user too, but did switch to USB C versions when I upgraded my machine. I also buy them when on offer from Amazon.

I only connect my external HDD intermittently, and Time Machine copes with this really well...
