I know nothing about these things but a friend is looking at getting an ipad and I suggested that an external HD might be a good thing to go with it for all his itunes music - will any recent hard drive work with an ipad ?

Ive been having a think about the seagate goflex satellite hard drive, it's a portable 500gb unit that connects to the ipad via wifi.
I don't expect it's to fastest connection for data shuffling, but it's allegedly more than fast enough to stream a hd movie to the ipad while the drive is tucked away safely in your bag etc.

Seems fast enough to stream video to 2 devices simultaneously (at least the Kingston one), according to the tech radar article.

In our demo, a representative from Kingston uploaded everything from music, pictures, documents and even movies, and with what apppeared to us to be little if any lag, was able was able to stream this content to an iPad as well as an iPhone simlutaneously.

If you're worried about space on the iPad for music then enabling home sharing on the computer would be a free way to do it. I don't think any of the solutions suggested will help with iTunes otherwise.
