External hard drive

As long as you 'Copy' them they will remain on your external drive.

In Windows you can use CTRL+C to Copy, and CTRL+V to paste.
CTRL+X will move when you paste in a new location i.e. the original will be deleted.

If you drag folders between windows they will probably be moved rather than copied.

Have a look at synctoy from microsoft as if you set this up to either synchronise or echo certain folders then it's a good way to keep backups. I use 2 of the same type of external hard drives and synchronise a photo folder there and with a home server which means I have 3 identical copies of my photo folders for backup.

Usually and almost always happening is that if you move files using drag and drop from any folders on one drive to any folders on a different drive, for example from the hard drive on the computer to a USB memory stick, from hard drive on computer to an external drive, from USB to hard drive, from one external drive to another external drive, from memory card in a camera to computer, any drives to any other drives, they tend to leave the original on the current drive, and make copies to the target drive. Unless you change the settings in Control Panel or any other settings.

When it is moving from one folder to another folder on the same drive, it always move not copy.

To be sure, hold down the CTRL button as you drag. You should see a + appear on the icons, and this will force a copy

I'd also keep a couple of copies on DVD disks,so if any thing happens to your mechanical drives you still have them.
