I'm looking to purchase an external hard drive to use to store my pictures.
I'm no pro, and only use the camera as a hobby, so i think 1TB should be more than enough.
Are there any makes/models that are recommended for reliability/build quality etc, and which ones are to be avoided?
I've also read to back up onto CD/DVD's as well, any other tips?

I've used a couple of Western Digital USB drives for a few years, Raw files get put on there and also burnt to an archive DVD's. General rule of thumb is if it's important back it up in two places, and also consider storing backups somewhere else, just in case the house burns down taking PC, USB drives and DVD's with it.

You might want to look at some external drives with 2 HD's that mirror each other for redundancy as I work in IT and have seen these failures all too often!

External drives are good, but you cannot depend on them solely, they are prone to failure like every other mechanical device. Either that or look at an external hard-drive and cloud storage option for redundancy.

Key thing to remember, is that whatever manufacturer you go for, they don't make the drives (few exceptions), so you get a cool looking drive and it will still have a Western Digital or Seagate drive inside.

thanks for the advice.
can you recommend any of the 2 HD's that you mentioned, links etc.
it'll save me having to ask you what they are and embaressing myself and saving you typing out a reply that'll probably go over my head anyway!!

hi mate ,buy a hard drive caddy and a seperate drive to go in it ,
it takes up more space but they tend to last longer ,you can also get caddys with space for two hard drives
i wouldnt mirror two drives but run them as jabod as if your mirroring it can copy errors over to both copies as well

I have a couple of WD hard drives as back up and find them superb for what i need , very easy / quick to use and can handle any type of file .

Get two, different makes, and store the same pics on both. Disc drives are not long-term reliable in my experience, best have redundancy.

I hope your backup discipline is better than mine. I still get caught out occasionally, but through not backing up regularly, not through drive failure.
