External hard drive, portable?
I have plumped for Iomega models, always been good, not had any problems with around 10 of the things at work, prefer two smaller to one large, huge capacity drives are all well and good but if it goes down you lose everything.

I am going to get a new ex HD this Saturday. I will be looking with something that has a Samsung or Hitachi HD inside

I will max out at 500gb as i prefer to have a few hard drives rather than one big one and taking a chance !

Got one of THESE in Nov last year, it was £44.00 then. Impressed so far, ordering another one soon!!

Not sure what you mean by padock & weddings! Horse paddock, Motor racing paddock? Are you going to do a wedding as a tog/second/friend?

I generally buy an internal HD then put it in a caddy. May cost a couple of £ extra but gives you more options on which drive to buy.

My current favourites are the Samsung Spinpoint flavour (got a 1Tb and a 1.5Tb, and will be getting a 500Gb one soon), very quiet when running and middling on price point compared to the others available.

Go for something with a decent brand, it'll be worth the ££ in the long run. And make sure your pictures are stored in 2 places, preferably in different locations.

Paddock shots? Well, it depends - I've shot everything from 10.5mm fisheye to 500mm prime in the paddock!

Probably your best best for both that and weddings though is one of the constant f2.8 17-55 ish lenses. Either the Canon one (which will probably be the best but most expensive) or the equivalent from Sigma/Tamron/Tokina.

Should be useful for both your subjects. Get yourself a proper flash though to go with it and learn how to use it...

I've never had any problems with Western Digital portable drives. Nice light packages, pretty cheap. Just make sure you have more than one of them for ultimate security. Many pros (I am not one), have 3 back ups, one always held off-site. Depends how secure you want to feel.

As Woblee mentioned, I too would opt for a typical internal hard disk of your liking. I know often when buying a branded external hard drive, the disk inside is old or slow.
I tend to get a good fast sata drive and one of these so you can interchange any drive you like. OK, its not a caddy so if you dont want drives exposed then obviously get a caddy enclosure for it instead of what I have linked to.

The only thing I would say about that (internal drives) is that if your PC gets nicked, you're stuffed. A friend was recently burgled, and lost all family photos from the last 5 years. When I leave home, I take one of the backup drives with me. Overkill perhaps, but I know that no matter what happens, my photos are as safe as they can be for very little expense.

What we mean is use an internal drive in a caddy which is exactly the same as an external usb drive, just that you have to put the 2 parts together yourself.
