I have an external hard drive and I had it setup so that anyone with access to the drive location via the internet could access the files, but it doesn't really act the way I want it to. When accessing it remotely, the file previews (ie. jpgs and psds) don't display and the file is downloaded locally and then i'd have to reupload it once I've resaved the file, so it's no different to downloading an image from a website. I want it to work more like a cloud storage solution. I could use dropbox, google drive, etc. but I want the files to be stored locally on my ext hard drive and still act as a cloud storage.

Am I on cloud 9 or is this feasible?

A NAS drive will prob be the best option, I'm sure you can set it up so that your ext HD works like that, but a lot will depend on the OS of the host machine

A NAS like a synology that features both Filestation and WebDAV connectivity options

A vpn would also work.

You're lookkng at dynamic DNS setup too and port forwarding on your router depending what method you go for.

Good luck with explaining that on a forum :exit:

I use SVN to provide remote access to my files over the internet, but that's not a solution I'd recommend to most.
