Afternoon all,

I have tried a search of the forum first, but in desperate need of a solution today preferably, for any way of extending the battery life by utilising external battery packs

Example: https://www.amazon.com/XTPower-MP-1...t=true&ref_=sr_1_7&sr=8-7&tag=batt-yt-desc-20

The trouble here is this is on Amazon.com. Doing a check of Amazon.co.uk brought up a lot of external batteries but aimed more at mobile charging.

Has anybody got experience of hooking up a dummy battery to these packs, and where i could get some without breaking the bank.

thanks

As you haven't bothered to tell us what camera it's for, it's hard to be definitive but I would say you're almost certain to have a voltage mis-match with the devices you've quoted.

I use an Ankar powerbank for my Sony RX100 works very well and is relatively cheap.

Presumably you're plugging that in to the USB socket rather than via the battery compartment?

Sorry ... it's for Canon cameras..

Eek... USB? And not battery.. .. the advice I was given was through the battery compartment...but is there another possible way?

Buy a spare battery?

The easirst for me to date is extra batteries with a comnination of USB charger and also inverter to mains battery charger. (Dual slot). The aUSB charger can also be attached to a Powerbank of 20,000 mAh +- good for a couple of full charges.

[Most Compact 20000mAh Portable Charger] Anker PowerCore 20100 - Ultra High Capacity Power Bank with Most Powerful 4.8A Output, PowerIQ Technology for iPhone, iPad and Samsung Galaxy and More (Black) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00VJSGT2A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_DvrFxb38GWYJ3

Spare charged batteries in the field are far more robust and the normal kit is already a hanful without adding weight.

Hello I'm assuming that you are going away to somewhere without mains power
I am in a similar situation am going away for a week and won't have access to mains power
I decided that the best solution was just to get several spare batteries
7 day shop do canon compatible ones cheaply

Some cameras can be powered via a usb connection, others only via batteries or dummy battery packs that accept an external power supply.

The answer is either in your cameras manual or on the Canon web-site under 'accessories'.

Please give more specific information - which camera model? Why you plan to do that needs external power? Where will you be doing this?

Hi thanks to everyone for replies... I hastily posted with too little detail.. I will have access to mains power but not where the cameras will be as I'll be using them to shoot timelapse images and fear the batteries will die before the card is full.. I'll check out 7day though amazon do a pack of 4 very cheaply and although reviews are positive I am cautious... I just thought if I used a powerbank then less running around esp where 2 of the cameras will be, 1 being a tree ...

Depending on the model, your camera may take an external grip/battery pack and that will give you two batteries attached to the camera although they may need to be switched manually which isn't ideal. Powerbanks generally deliver 5V to a USB port, your camera battery is probably 7.2V. I'm sure you can see why the dummy battery idea isn't going to work.

Some Nikon, Sony & Fujifilm cameras are designed to work with a dummy battery and external power pack which are available through eBay and Amazon but I don't know about Canon. As advised, check the accessories list in your camera manual and inspect the battery compartment door to see if there's removable flap to allow access for a power cable.
