Hi,

Looking for a bit of advice on extension tubes.

Is there really any difference (except for auto focus contacts) between say the official canon extension tubes and say cheap ones from ebay?

Theres a massive price difference, wondering if there are any large risks?

The contacts also set the aperture.....the contactless tubes will result in you shooting wide open unless you go through the sequence of setting the aperture without the tube, selecting DoF preview, removing the lens and fitting the tube before shooting.

I asked the same Q a couple of weeks ago..

The difference is in
The quality of construction
The materials used
The fact that they are internally baffled so that the metal contacts don't create reflections...

I got the kenko ones...

I have seen that WEX states that the Kenko Tubes are not compatible with Ef-S lenses.
Anyone know why? Is it to do with coverage or contacts?

The older type of Kenko's weren't compatible as the rear element mount of the EF-S lenses fouled on the tube's internal baffle, the later models of kenko solved this problem.
If the tube has a round baffle then it's fine, if it's got the older rectangular baffle then it's EF lenses only....unless you cut out the baffle.

the new tubes produced by kenko are useable with ef-s lenses. bought a set at the weekend, limited practice so far but they appear to work well. It states on the box that they are ef and ef-s tubes.
