Allow your lens to focus at a closer point than it would normally be able to do, used to aid macro photography - with out necessarily using a true macro lens, I think :shrug:

Just hold a lens in front of the camera not connected by about an inch or so and look through the viewfinder at something fairly close. Move towards or away from the target to focus. Now you know what tubes do
