Hi
I am new to photography and know nothing about it. I have a canon 350d which i have had for about a year and taken photos of family etc, but i am thinking of buying a canon 550d with the twin kit lens as i am going on safari this year and am hoping to take some good shots. Anyway my question is can i use and an extension lens on the 55 - 250mm lens to increase it upto 300mm. As i have said i am going on safari and need a longer zoom so would this work? Sorry if this sounds like a completely ridiculous question.

if you're going to shoot videos go for 550D if not get a Sigma 50-500 150-500 or something like this it will be amazing for safari shots I think :)

I'm not sure that all TC's will fit a 55-250, possibly the Kenko but you would lose 1 stop of light ie be down to f8 for a start

As Rob said, there's no TC's for the EF-S lenses and if there was you'd lose AF by going to f8. I started out with a 550D and it is a fantastic camera and can give you some spectacular photos. The 55-250 IS is also a fantastic lens for the price and highly recommended on here and other forums.
However, I fear it may be a bit short for a wildlife safari and would suggest you look into either a Canon 100-400 L or the Sigma 150-500 OS. I've got both and they are both fantastic performers, but the Canon gives a slightly better IQ but loses a slight bit of reach. You can use a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x TC with the 100-400 L and still retain AF as I have done so and the AF is still very quick in good light.
Both of these lenses can be rented at various places on the net for a reasonable price if they are out of your budget. The Sigma 150-500 OS is available new for just over £600 and the Canon 100-400 L is around the £1000 mark so they're not cheap to buy.

Thanks everyone for all your replies. But i now have another question i have seen that the 550d has a image stabiliser on the camera, so does this mean that you dont need to have image stabiliser on the lens. Sorry told you i was new and knew nothing!

The camera doesn't have an image stabiliser. It's on the lenses denoted by the letters IS.
