Extending a Virgin cable, cable

We're about to move into a new house soon with a Virgin box downstairs and also one upstairs in a bedroom. The problem is the upstairs one is in the wrong bedroom.

Can I just extend into another bedroom by fitting a longer cable to the existing point or do I have to pay Virgin extra on top of the cost of moving to the new address?
 
It's just coaxial cable which you should be able to pick up in B&Q or similar. You just need to make sure you get the correct impedance cable (50 ohm or 75 ohm) which will be stamped on your existing cable.
 
Ring them. You are moving to a new house so they will sort you out so you remain a customer, or to become a customer. You won't have to pay and if they suggest you do, just tell them ok as you'll go to sky, and they'll try to keep you.
 
as @ecoleman says but to be honest, I've extended both mine with standard TV (75ohm) cable and had no problems at all.
Our bedroom Tivos are actually in the loft with remote extenders attached to the wall hung TVs - It is a much cleaner look with no cables visible. If you consider doing this just make sure the boxes site on something solid and don't get covered with insulation.
Virgin are very good at moving cables for you too.
 
RG6 is fine and generally what VM use anyway. Probably best to buy a pre-terminated cable as crimp on plugs require you to buy a crimper, and screw on plugs can be unreliable. You'll also need a coupler to join the two cables.

You could get virgin in to do it, but they may charge and the quality of the job is entirely dependent on the installer. I've seen some very bad (and very good) installations and cable runs!
 
Been up to the house today and realised that I can simply move the cable and box from where it enters the house on the outside wall and move it along the wall to the intended destination bedroom. Then drill an hole and refit.

If I had gone the extended cable and route it through rooms then I'd have been looking at possibly 30 metres of cable, fitted carpets up in three rooms and then trying to get them back down again. By going the 'outside' option I won't need any cable and will in fact have a load left over.

BTW Virgin now do a Quickstart package where they send a new customer the kit to fit themselves all free of charge (as long as they are moving to a Virgin ready property) In our case though because we are existing customers we don't get that option although as I said to the 'associate' I'll be taking it all with me and can easily plug it in myself. I'll be charged £20 for the 'fitting'

After arguing the case we're now getting a £5 per month reduction on our package for a year and an upgraded router.
