I have a Canon 60d and have a Sigma 150-500 would anyone recommend using either a 1.4 or 2 extender?I photograph mainly birds and wildlife and someone advised against them.

No, I wouldn't recommend this. You'd need to use a 3rd party TC to get autofocus, and even then it will be very slow on a 60D. Plus you'd lose a stop of light, even with a 1.4x TC which would push you into high isos pretty quickly.

Tried this approach with the Canon 100-400 and it was pants!

I agree it would not give you decent results. I have a Sigma 150-500 and have tried both a 1.4 and 2X extender using a 5D mark 3.

You will of course lose one or two stops and possibly auto focus as well. I have found that my Sigma is fine on its own. When I put either of the extenders on it was virtually impossible to handhold and even on a tripod it was difficult to get really sharp focus. Lens shake also becomes a problem. As you will know on a full frame camera a 2x extender will give you a max of 1000mm. On your cropped body it becomes 1600mm at the extreme trying to keep the lens absolutely stable is virtually impossible.
