Optional Extended Warranties.... as a general rule I always say no with whatever I buy but what do people do with DSLR's (Canon in particular here)?

Firstly am I right in assuming the standard Canon warranty on Bodies is 1 year?

Late Friday I ordered a Canon 5DII from Wilkinson Cameras and they offer an extended 3 year warranty (so 2 further years) for £30... I didn't take it but wonder if for the sake of £15 a year it would be worth it in this case (I'm assuming I could call them first thing tomorrow and add it to the order).

I use/keep cameras for many years and am not a serial camera flipper so there is a chance I would use it.

That said, I've used Canon cameras for over 10 years and never (touch wood) had a problem and needed to use the warranty... I'm therefore assuming I won't have any problems with my 5DII.

Thoughts?

I've taken out the extended 3rd year with my Nikon D700 - never have done before with previous Nikon bodies but with a £1800 camera for just under £100 & is covered against everything inc AD & T you cant go wrong - even if its for piece of mind...

I'd spend that amount on costa coffee's in a month

I'm like you Jonmurgie, I usually steer well clear of extended warranties. However, I got one when I bought my 7D last month. It was £47 to extend the 1 year warranty to 3 years and added accidental damage. (This was with John Lewis.) I thought it was quite a reasonable price, considering it added accidental damage too. If anything happens to it I can avoid a claim on my home insurance.

In your case, even without accidental, I think £15 per year is nothing for that added piece of mind on such a product. If you think about all the trivial things you can spend your money on each week, e.g. papers, coffee, sandwiches, mars bars, for just a little more than £1 per month you've added some protection to your expensive camera.

As a comparison - I bought a 360 a couple of months ago. It cost me £230 in total and HMV offered to extend the warranty. I can't remember how much it was, might have been £30 or so, but I declined. And this was in full knowledge of how unreliable MS's consoles can be. I just didn't think it was worth it.

I think I'll call them first thing and see what their extended warranty covers and who it's "through" as at £30 it's quite cheap on something that's over £1600 IMO.

Isn't the Jessops warranty a good one?

When I was deciding where to buy my 7D Jessops was on my list, but they wanted £129 for their 'repair plan only'; whereas John Lewis only wanted £47 for repair and accidental for the same 3 year period.

Called Wilkinson Cameras and added the £30 warranty... seems too cheap to not really!

£30 is a good buy for two years JM. In fact, it's a steal. Extended warranty on a MacBook Pro for instance is way over £200. Now I wish I had taken that out!!!

Cheers
