If you take out an extended warranty on a product when does that commence from? most goods come with a manufactures 1 year warranty anyway. So does it start at the end of the manufactures one.
If not we are being conned into say taking out for example a 3 year one from a retailer when in reality it only covers year 2 and 3.

You are only being conned if you are misled into beleiving you are getting something you are not.

I bought a 3 year extended warranty on my Fuji X100, it cost £50, I'm fully aware that it covers me for year 2 and 3, as year 1 is covered by the manufacturers warranty.

I bought 3yr apple care for my iMac, fully aware it covered me for year 2 and 3 ( lucky I did as I recently needed a new screen)
 
It really depends on what the extended warranty includes.

Many include free support and also accidental damage. The manufactures warranty won't cover these.
It's for you to decide whether or not its worth paying for, or even need. Ie you may have accidental damage on a home nsurance policy.
 
Thanks for the replies, takes thinking about as to take or not an extended warranty.

An Extended warranty is an insurance policy. It may or may not cover the same events as the original manufacturers policy.

A policy bought direct from an insurance company can be a lot cheaper.
 
General consensus is that they are a rip-off - SOGA covers most bar accidental/vandalism.
