HI All

Sorry for this complete newbie question,i have been having a play with exposure trying different things etc.

my question is are there any rules of thumb with the aperture/shutter speed mix.

i do realise that those experienced among you use these mixes for effect, and that in some cases one naturally takes precedent ie a moving target needs a higher shutter speed so you may have to move the aperture an f stop or two.

in a normal shot though is the guidelines, does one take priority over the othe?

cheers

I guess that all depends what you are trying to do. I normally use Aperture mode as I'm mostly concerned with focus. I love landscapes and will normally plump for an perture of say f11 and let the camera work out the shutter speed.

I dont think there is any hard and fast rule about which takes preference. Its simply about what it is you are trying to achieve.

I would have thought that most DSLR users would use either Aperture Mode or Manual for the most part but I could be wrong. No doubt they'll tell you.

Play around your camera with Aperture mode. Understand what the camera does when you rack up or down the numbers.

Then do the same with shutter.

Dont get hung up on exact combinations as of yet. Just figure out what big and small numbers can do in both.

Once you have done that, look at the histogram. Research that. Then come back for a manual chat

Hi
thanks for that, CT read the thread excellent, this is exactly what i was looking never understood dof before. I also didnt know the hand shake rule.

so straight away i have some guidelines over and above meter reading for light settings.

i am off to have a play tommorow.

cheers
