Exposure v Brightness in software

Yes
I open a raw file in what my software calls the "Raw Studio" and I can, within a range of plus or minus two stops, alter the exposure. I can also, in the main part of my imaging software, alter the brightness.

As a relative newcomer to digital photography, I am not sure of the difference between what these two functions are achieving. They appear to be similar but I haven't yet figured out what that difference is.

Please can someone point me in the right direction?

They are probably both more or less the same. However, in my opinion, this is too late.

Much better to get the exposure right in camera.

Digital sensors haven't got enough exposure lattitude to throw away some dynamic range just to get the overall brightness looking right. Certainly not by two stops.

Steve.

Thanks, Steve!

I agree about getting it right in camera. It's just that I wondered if there was some different algorithm being used in each case, or something like that.

Thanks, Russ!

That looks interesting. I'll have a good look at that.

Thanks, Ozei!

Post 5 gives a clear and concise explanation of the difference.
