I'm still relatively new to D-SLR and CS2 but I'm on a steep learning curve. What I'm looking to do, is creat an HDR image. I understand what I have to do, but what's throwing my off is the 'Under-expose by 1 stop and Over-evpose by 1 stop'

In laymans terms, what is exposure? I use my camera primarily for motorsport and I'm probably already using this but I don't know what/how to move one stop up and one down (as I say, I probably already am doing this as I'm shooting in 'M' mode on my D300 mostly). Is it moving the 'F' number up 1 and down 1 or is it to go +1 and -1 on the 'Exposure Compensation'? I'm sure this makes me sound like a right noob but I would like to attempt some still images rather than guys going past me at over triple figures most of the time, thank you.

Have a look for something called Automatic exposure bracketing (at least thats whats it's called on Canons). This will allow you to take 3 photos in quick succession, you just have to dial in the amount of compensation you want :)

Viper, nice camera.

If you are looking at still imagery, then i would suggest a tripod, placing your camera in M mode changing your apeture/f stops up and down, i would suggest using RAW .
I use RAW opening up in CS2 making two images in jpgs with different exposures, then using Photomatix for HDR or Exposure Blending, i have yet had good results from CS2 HDR.
Just my ten penth worth..

If you want answers for Exposure i would suggest you google it for more indepth reading...

regards

Photomatix will automatically make a HDR from 1 RAW :)

Only problem with shooting RAW is that CS2 doesn't recognise .NEF files. Does Capture NX2 allow you to HDR?

Export the files from Capture NX2 as 16bit TIFF's and create the HDR from that :)

I don't think CS2 supports NEF however You can just download the FREE adobe DNG converter and use that to convert the NEF files to DNG - they will then open in CS2/Bridge.

as i understand CS3 does support NEF/Raw files...

OR as mole2k says.

Easiest way:

Put it on a tripod and change shutter speeds up and down one setting including the middle setting. Combine those three images in Photomatix and you're done!

You could change aperture, but something might go a little out of focus.

Additional you could keep the same aperture and shutter settings and change the EV.

Then try with 4, 5, or 6 pictures (or how many you want).

As you're using M mode, you just need to shift the meter so it's one stop above or one stop below 0, aperture or shutter depending on what yopu're shooting I guess.

Of course CS2 will open your .NEF files, they are standard Nikon RAWs but you will need to update camera RAW from the adobe website.

CS2's handling of HDR is pretty dire though. You may want to look at photomatix instead.

Can't be arsed to find the link right now but if you search 'petemc' and 'HDR guide' on here it will point you to a very useful resource.

Personaly I wouldn't bother with HDR.

On the front of the d300 there are two buttons.. one is the DOF preview, the other is the AEB button, press & hold that in, then turn the front dial (aperture control) until it says 3F or 5F on the top LCD. Then shoot the required amount of frames, either handheld or on a tripod.

Making 3 exposures from one shot isn't technically HDR, as I'm sure Mr Carr will tell you when he no doubt arrives into this topic ;)
