I was covering a Rock Concert offered by the Summer Festival Authorities
of a small town on the Weinstraße this Summer where I took advantage of
the situation to test my new Profoto D2's. Time: 22:57:26.

On each side of the stage and a few feet behind the front, 2 giant stands
with vertical extensions and fixed on each a very new Profoto D2 + dome
attached to a RFi 5' Softbox Silver Octa. The stands and extensions took
the flash heads to 7 meters high and, for security considerations, were on
three angles anchored in the ground.

Triggered with the Profoto TTL Nikon Remote on a combo made of a hand-
held D3X and 14mm ƒ 2,8 set at ISO 800, ƒ11, 1/125s, Manual and Matrix.

This shot was an equipment test for me but it turned out pretty good and the
Summer Festival A
uthorities bought it too!

Does softboxes make any differences at these distance?

Yes and no.

YES, these Octa are really meant to project forwards the light
when stripped of their diffusers and have silver inner surfaces.

NO, as you observe, the distance is great so they're behaving
like solid reflectors such as giant Magnums.

… I forgot another point…

Had I used hard reflectors, I would not have got the same coverage!

Looking at the harsh lighting I doubt the soft boxes had much effect and if they do it is very little. This subject very much suits the hard lighting and the rim lighting looks superb. Excellent picture and well executed.

Thanks Kevin!

As I said. given the distances noticed by Soeren before,
the only advantage remaining is the powerful dispersion.

A hard reflector like the Magnum is very efficient in pro-
jecting the light but three or four would have been neces-
sary to cover the whole place.
