Firstly hi all
I started well more had a go at film photography last year and my 1st 2 rolls were shocking well one didn't even come out il add some of them later
Anyway I got bit fed up and sacked it off went back to digital but a big part of me could not stop thinking about film so after a lot of thinking and resurch just got myself a f90 I really like the look and thought of shooting on expired film so bought 3 rolls of Kodak 400 expired 09/06 to test out
I'm going to give it a good go this time and not give up !
Does anyone shoot expired film ? Heard it's a good idea to drop ISO 1stop per decade of expired time so should I shoot the 400 @ 200?
And help tips greatly appreciated
Also anyone know best/cheapest place to get developed West Yorkshire area was using the flash centre but it's 8 pound a go don't sound much but drop 10 rolls off really feel it on the wallet :)
Thanks

drop 'em in the post to Peak Imaging (freepost labels on their website, and when the films come back, they send a postage paid box for the next ones...)

Well when I cleared out all the film from sellers at boot sales and my freezer... I'll start buying fresh film other than Poundland. I've just put some Kodak gold film in the camera and taken some shots and realised it expired in 2002  Well I'll know the film will come out but hope it doesn't have colours that can't be corrected in Photoshop. Some of my shots at the Whipsnade mega meet were on film expired in 2006, so film is quite tough providing the film given\sold to you was not found in the Sahara dessert. ;)

Kodak 400 ??

B/W......Slide or Colour neg

Personally, I would strongly recommend starting with fresh film.

There's nothing wrong with using expired film, but when you're just starting out and you encounter a problem, you won't know if it's the film, your exposures, your equipment, the development, the scanning, or something else that is causing the issue. At least by using fresh film and a good lab for development and scanning, you can control some of these variables.

Once you know that everything works okay, then I'd start introducing other variables, such as expired film or home developing.

Kodak max colour sorry missed that is that negative ??

Thanks for the replays
I will pick couple of rolls of fresh

If that's 35mm colour negative (C41) film, I would send it to Photo Express in Hull rather than Peak, if you want a decent scan at a reasonable price (£5 per film for process and scan at 2000 ppi). Downside is you have to pay postage to them (£3.20 first class) plus a £1 for return postage. Upside is you get 50p per film discount if you tell them you're a TP member and quote your forum name. They don't do 120 though, or black and white, or transparency (E6).

While RJ is right as ever, in practice you can get decent results from expired colour neg film, particularly the "amateur" rather than pro versions. Don't forget that you can get 24-shot Agfa Vista 200 in most Poundlands, guess the price!

If you are looking for accurate, predictable results, fresh film is the way to go. Also definitely shoot at least one roll to test your gear. However, if you like a bit of unpredictability - one of the attractions of film for me - expired film is great fun.

thanks all i would one day love to develop my own looked at the kits but it all bit over my head

Seriously - developing black and white is not difficult :)

What kit would you recommend and what costs would I be looking
Thanks

Here's a sticky about the process - https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/tutorials/how-to-develop-your-first-b-w-film.114/

But, in brief - for the fixed costs, a changing bag (£10-£20 eBay), a developing tank (£10-£20 eBay), three jugs (£3 your local pound shop), a thermometer capable of accurately measuring 20 degrees C (£3 eBay), a bottle opener, a pair of scissors, and something that will enable to you measure small amounts of liquid (I used one of those medicine measuring things).

Then you need chemicals - developer, stop bath, and fixer. Costs vary, and postage is expensive if you buy online (Royal Mail won't touch them) but you're probably looking at £30-£35, which if you choose a thrifty developer like Rodinal could do you 40-200 rolls.

Then . . . well, you have some developed negatives, but you'll need some way of showing people, so you'll probably need a scanner. £40 (if you're lucky) - £100 second-hand for an Epson flatbed.

Thanks for that defiantly something I will look into
I have a Epson xp215 printer scanner don't know if will do it ?

Unlikely that your scanner will scan negatives, you might want to search one of the dedicated film scanners or the highly regarded Epson V series.

It would have to be a scanner that can scan negs and not a scanner that just scan docs.

well 1 roll shot i dropped the iso 1 stop to 200 will take to asda for dev tomorrow and low res scan see how it looks before i shoot any more
might grab a fresh roll or two while im there
i took my 1st shot and instantly looked at back of camera doh!! had a little chuckle to myself forgot how much it slows you down and makes you think about every shot was just over the road at the priory so nothing special but a nice test of colors

Its CCimaging that develop film at the back, the flash center is a digi gear shop at the front, it say's £7.00 for 35mm c41 and scan on their website.
That said, its not cheap and not very economical if you're putting 24 exposure film in instead of 36.
To be perfectly frank, I'd put this film in a supermarket for process and scan, my expectations wouldn't be very high for 24 exp ood print film in an iffy camera to start with, it doesn't seem to make much sense putting those if's, buts and maybe's through a premero processing service.
But, if you ever require a good pro lab, I definitely recommend CC..:)

edit, see that's what happens when you make a pot of tea mid post.....lol

lol
yes i totally agree i bought the out of date film as just wanted to test it out granted should of tested the camera 1st but to be honest its immaculate inside and out looks bearly used and tbh im the least patient patient person in the world sun came out i had the ood film in the cool so in it popped over road i went lol
if i take that roll in to asda tomorrow it will cost a couple of quid if they duffers its no big deal got the 3 rolls for 7.50 inc postage so its not been a overly expensive experiment
must say though sat with a glass of wine thinking god i hope they work out i took my time thought about my settings etc so can do no more

where is cc ? is it local?
with asda been not the best is that just the scan will my negs be ok to get say a higher res scan at some point ?
thanks
matt

Asda processing seems fine, the scans are OK, colours can be a little bit off, but over-sharpened and 1200 ppi, which again is OK for the web and TP, but a little tight if you need to change level and crop. Some folk here use it as a sort of digital contact print, to work out which ones to get properly scanned.

cool thanks will post images well if they come out lol

You say in your opening post you where using the flash center, the flash center don't process film, they are a photographic shop for mostly digital equipment, the guys that processed your film were CC, they are in the back of the same unit as the flash center, at least that's how it was when I went there last....which was a while ago cos I'm not shooting colour.
The signage on the outside of the building displays the CCimaging logo, and The Flash Center logo, two separate company's...I think ???, I always thought they were anyway..

Asda use expensive Fuji machines for dev and scanning, but the weak link is the operator and the scanner set by the engineers which IMO clip the highlights and the "blacks" plus over sharpening which works well on many shots but on some it looks terrible..so e.g. if you are using a very sharp lens on the subject on a sunny contrasty day it can look bad.. The detail in the shot after Asda scanning is equal to an expensive Epson V750 flatbed scanner, but with Epson scanning you can eliminate the Asda clipping and over sharpening also scan to get more pixels\sq mm which would suit cropping and larger prints (but as mentioned you will not get more detail ).
One guy said somewhere that the operator at his Asda knows how to scan higher and does it for him, but the girl at my Asda said the machine is set by the engineers, so the Asda scans for most of us is set to roughly the equivalent of a 2mp digital camera...but then some digi guys have said some of their best shots were with old digi cameras.........................................................................

Thanks for that guys
Well guess where I'm heading POUNDLAND lol

Thanks for that
Well didn't exactly go to plan the scanner was broke at Morley asda so went to Dewsbury and was no staff on so back to the other asda and dropped roll off going to be a few days then headed off to crown point pound land as didn't sell film neither did pound world next door anyone know which ones in West Yorkshire do stick film ?
Thanks

Found some at pointe POUNDLAND it's 24 / 200 is that right stuff?

The Poundland Agfa Vista 200 is 24-shot these days. Unless you're processing your own or using Asda, that can end up expensive, as a lot of the "process and scan" prices are per film, whether 24 or 36 shot. In Poundland it can be hard to find, but look for the blank CDs, earplugs and other media stuff, then somewhere near there is usually a stack of bright red boxes... bingo!

Found some bargain ! Just got 4 rolls if it comes out ok will get more thanks for the heads up

I get my films processed and scanned at Asda and I keep asking if they can improve the scan resolution. The answer has always been no. I recently noticed in the exif data of my scanned photos that the camera was listed as SLP1000se AKA the Fuji Frontier 340. I found the brochure and though this doesn't mention the resolution of the scanner but I read somewhere that it automatically sets the scan resolution depending on what size prints you are getting. I imagine if, as I do, you just get them scanned to CD, it just scans at 5MP. I know when Tesco were still doing it I got a film processed and printed and the scans were a higher resolution than normal. I pointed it out and after that I always got higher resolution scans there. Until they changed to Max Spielmann, tripled the price of film processing and eventually just moved extra kiosks in and did off site film processing.

yea i asked them about the res and they said they got no controll over it all set by engineers
still waiting for my film as scanner was down but hoping they come out ok got another 2 for them if they good

They give the option for one hour or for it to be sent off. Maybe it could be scanned at a higher resolution if it was sent off? I'll have to ask about that next time.

il ask when i collect my rolls see what they say

If you like the results from Asda it would be worth while getting the phone extension so you can phone them if everything is working to save a wasted journey....h'mm one guess how I know and not forgetting I traveled to Asda once and forgot to take the film :banghead::eek::rolleyes:

god that sounds like me lol
ive set off with dslr and no lenses, again left battery at home and yesterday left tripod attachment for bottom of camera while going for slow speed water shots
took every other item i own except that  not the 1st and wont be the last
yes good idea will do that
