Yes
have you had any experience of Sony A100 or A200? using a minolta lens? or do you reccommend another affordable dslr that would be better for say portraits and fashion photography?
i've used a few Nikons and think they're a bit pants tbh
feel free to post links to pictures, which would much appreciated!

all I know is that Sony bought out Minolta and the Sony 'A' mounts are the ones that are compatible with Minolta. I recently sold a Minolta lens (via ebay) to a Sony user and he was happy enough. Sorry I couldn't be more help

I have an a200 and if you are going to take photography seriously then I would say maybe its not the best camera, but if it will be for just days out etc its fine. There are loads of minolta lenses avaliable on ebay which go fairly cheap and there is a good range too!

to practice and break into i think its a good choice esp the a200

course its not a d3 so you have to be realistic with your expectations but saying that - it still can produce really amazing pictures and whilst you get better adn better you can then upgrade.

the mintola lenses work fine with my a200 i have a few. its always a good option to go for esp with the image stablisation built into the body rather than the lens

The A200 was my first DSLR, and is quite sufficient for taking decent pictures.

It will work with any Minolta or Sony AF lens, and has a better viewfinder than the A300 / A350 which were the next models up at the time it was released (the Sony Live View implementation has an impact on the OVF).

For Portraits / Fashion I'm assuming you will be working with good light, so using low ISO, which is where the A200 is strongest.

The only slight issue is the hot shoe mount on Sony / Minolta is not the standard one, so you would need an adaptor to use the camera to fire standard studio flash units - not an expensive or difficult to obtain item, but something to remember before you turn up and need one!

i bought a remote for my sony without needing a hot shoe for around £17 i think

they're made by yongung or something lke that will check at home!

i bought a sony to pc hotshoe from here just in case for about £3 from TP classifieds.

The Sony cameras are decent. At the end of the day, the A100/A200 are entry level cameras and you're really getting what you pay for.

The old Minolta lenses fit straight on. I spent quite a while shooting with an old Minolta AF 50mm f/1.7. Cracking lens.

Don't get too heated in the whole brand loyalty debate. You'll get different stories from each side of the fence. You should base your purchase on how each camera appeals to you in style, function and how comfortable it feels in your hands.

Unless you're planning on becoming a professional, the begineer cameras all have their own good points and bad points. Sony falls short in the amount of lenses available to purchase. It's not all bad though, some of the expensive lenses, like the Sony 70-200mm G Lens is probably the greatest 70-200mm out there. I do realise that I'm sticking my neck on the line there but it is an absolutely fantastic lens.

Don't forget the Sony Zeiss lenses. That was a big draw for me.

For examples of images, see the Sony Alpha group on Flickr.
