I have been looking at the Nissin Di700a and the air commander for my Sony cameras.
My main reason for looking at the Nissin system is hss.
There dose not seem to be much information about this system, so am interested in people's experiences.

It's a new system only just available at retail, and probably most welcome to Sony users. It offers HSS, same as others, and should work in exactly the same way - ie, very well, with full auto-TTL control, but with the significant caveat of a big loss of effective power. Think two or three stops drop in practical terms and you'll not be far out - great for fill-in flash at closer distances for portraits, couples and small groups.
 
Understand they are new to Sony, I was interested in feedback from people that may have used them with canon or Nikon.

My Nissin Di700A and Air 1 Commander arrived this afternoon to go with my Sony A6000 and so far it seems a good bit of kit. I'm now looking for a softbox or diffuser to go with it and getting more and more worried that I'm going to start spending lots of money on photography again!

They both come with a quick start guide and the full manuals can be downloaded from the Nissin site, although there's not a huge amount more detail in them. Getting the flashgun and trigger to communicate was a doddle and using them is pretty easy also. Both feel very well made and the battery cartridge in the flashgun is pretty cool as it would allow you to do very quick battery swaps if you bought a few of them.

HSS works fine although I felt the instructions to get it working were not very clear. It says to power up the flashgun and within three seconds hold the pilot button to activate it. Technically speaking this is true but it doesn't actually turn it on, it just activates the feature. You then have to hold the pilot button again for a few seconds to actually turn HSS on and the same again when you want to turn it off. Works up to 1/4000 which is my camera's max speed but it will go up to 1/8000 on suitable cameras.

The only real negative I have so far is that the AF-assist light will not work with the Sony mirrorless cameras but I believe this is the case for all flashguns including Sony ones, or so I've read. But the camera's own af-assist light still works and is fine for me.

Here's a quick grab shot I took this evening after dark using the A6000, Nissin Air Commander and the Di700A off camera to the left of the shot and bounced of a white wall to the left. Only a small warm light on in the room but I'm happy with the results, looks just like my shots with lovely daylight streaming in which is what I wanted. Shot in jpg so straight out of the camera.

I've also bought one of these to use with an a6000 so will see how it goes, purely bought because of the off camera hss support.
