Expected battery life running Capture One / Lightroom

I'm just wondering what people's experience is with running processor intensive applications on the Macbook Pro 15" on battery power? My macbook lasts around an hour before its flat, saying that the fan is on full speed most of the time. Which year do you guys have and how long does it typically last for you? Should I always be plugged in? Is battery power no use for my intended purpose?

LR will use a lot more power than word etc, so it's reasonable to expect a shorter battery life. TBH I would always plug in when editing if possible, because there is no advantage to using battery power and it might slow your machine to try to save energy.

Fire up Activity Monitor and look at the Energy tab to see what is using power.

You haven't said whether this is a new Macbook Pro 15 or an old one? My work Dell Laptop must be 3-4 years old and barely gets to lunch on the battery using only outlook, word and Excel (and of course some light internet browsing to visit talkphotography of course )

One odd thing I've found on my MacBook Pro, is that if the Finder has a window open to anything in Pictures folder, the CPU use goes right up to over 100%, and soon the fan goes on. Changing the Finder so the window is open with the Documents folder or any subset fixes it! It's weird, and I have no real explanation, other than that the Finder tries to make previews of images to show.
