Is this possible to do or is there a plugin for it? I've tried using the metadata wrangler plugin but it won't work for some reason.

I believe there is a Metadata Wrangler version for LR3 but I haven't tried it yet.
 
Download ExifToolGui. It'll allow you to strip out all of the metadata inc IPTC, Exif, Manufacturer and XML quickly and easily.
 
I should have mentioned that it's a stand alone though, rather than a plugin for LR!
