EXIF data question

I am curious about the "subject distance" data within the EXIF data. Is it just calculated from one single point? Is there any way to simultaneously capture the subject distance of 2 different objects in a photo?

I've no idea how they do it. But it's often very, very wrong.

The Exif reckons the subject of this image was 41cm away!
