Could I please have recommendations for a good quality but not too expensive printer for an exhibition I'm preparing for next year? – I’ll be looking for about 50 prints, mainly from digital files but a few from 35mm trannies.

The nearer the two sets of prints match the better – should I be looking to get the slides scanned?

Should I be looking for one particular process or printer/paper set-up rather than another to get the best balance between cost and quality?

I've used bpd photech in the past for Cibachromes - anyone have any recent experience of their work?

(Edit : Prints for framing under glass)

If you are looking for a cibachrome look - try Fuji Pearl paper.... however if you are framing under plain glass you'd need to have a mat or mount cut so there is an air gap as any gloss print will stick to plain glass...

yes - get good scans of your trannies.....

Yeah massive thumbs up for theprintspace if you are looking for high end printing. I get my photorag prints from there. Ordering one of their sample packs is a great way of experiencing different papers.

However if you are exhibiting and price is more of a consideration then they are quite expensive. Last time I had an exhibition I used ProAmImaging. That allowed me to increase my margins markedly.
