Hi all,

As some of you might have previously read - I've just recently plunged into Photography by purchasing a new Canon 550D (with 18 - 55mm Kit Lens) and even with my limited knowledge I've come to the conclusion that taking good pictures depends on 3 key factors:

1. Aperture
2. Shutter Speed
3. Film Speed (ISO)

...and from all of the tutorials etc... I've read / watched online I've been told to keep to Aperture Priority (AV) and Shutter Priority (Tv) modes because they give you the option to play around with those settings but still keep the other 2 settings at a happy medium ensuring a good exposure.

However, I'm struggling to see what results each setting (either high / low) can give with my kit lens, is there a post / website that shows a quick view of various possible outcomes of each setting?

e.g. These are a number of pictures taken with a very low shutter speed and is generally used to instill speed into the picture.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Exactly like that! That's a great help. The reason I ask is because when I'm in a certain scenario it's good to know what settings give what effects - at the minute I'm nowhere near that standard.

Are there groups on flickr where people post pictures which just have 'high' shutter speeds, or 'low' shutter speeds etc...? Just as a beginner it would be good to view other people's work using the mentioned techniques.

taking good pictures depends on 3 key factors:

1. Having a photographer's eye
2. Knowing your equipment inside out
3. Experience & knowledge of the photo process

All of which, I dare say, can be developed.

LOl....:bang::bonk:...just had a play with this link, and it has just proved to me how much i dont understand about the triangle,

sorry for jumping in hilly

Not a problem. Anything that helps us beginners out is welcome by me!

Im thinking i might put my camera on a tripod and take photos of the same thing- each time adjusting one of the settings up a step. Then group all the photos together and really study them. Study them so much i get fed up with the photos and hopefully recognise the difference changing settings have.

Another way i've found that works, is take loads and loads and loads of photos- but each time twiddling with the knobs and buttons. They all you have to do is spend 2-3 weeks going through the 5000+ photos looking for the one pic that look semi alright:lol:

Seriously though, im guessing it just takes practice and more practice.

I might pull up next to a windfarm and post pictures of the same windmill slightly changing the settings so i can lay all the pictures out and use them as a reference. Just need to find a windfarm now

Coley ;)
