Clearing out the attic, I came across some of the portfolio I used for my CSE photography in 1982.

I can't make out any theme or reason to the pictures...just seem to be a random collection of photographs.

Here are a few of them:

Unsurprisingly I didn't even get an 'O' Level equivalent grade.

Anyone else got any old attempts from long past exams?

CSE Photography? Really?

I dont think we had any interesting options like that :'(

I might have a slice of Cheese Pie from Home Ec i could offer :D

haha...yes I can recall having to do Home Ec too as the woodwork was full

I'd already been shooting for years before I went to college, so it makes little sense to post up Uni work. This however, is the first ever proper, considered photograph (excluding snapshots) I ever took after my Dad bought me a Pentax MV for christmas in 1983. I can even remember some of the details.. processed the film myself, and printed it myself.. as part of the same christmas I also got a Meopta enlarger with a Durst Neonon lens as well :) Best Xmas ever!

Pentax MV
Pentax 50mm f2 @ f8
Ilford HP5 developed in Acutol
Printed on Ilford Multigrade
Sky burned in for 3 stops.

wow....did you have this written down, or do you have an amazing memory?

I can't even remember what I had for tea last night.

I just remember it very well. It was a really pivotal moment. I remember the first ever film I used, as my Dad bought it for me. I obviously remember the camera and lens, as it was such a great Xmas present. We were very poor at the time.. this was the early 80s, and my Dad was only a machine tool fitter.. where he got the money I never knew, but it was such an amazing present. I remember it was f8.. because, like many when they first start, I was told lenses are their best at f8.. so I always tried to shoot at f8 regardless of what DOF I needed :) I remember the dev, because I carried on using it for years.. I loved acutol's sharpness.

I don't recall the shutter speed :)

That's so true...I was told it was f5.6 though, and didn't stray from that for ages.

What a great Christmas present to get.... do you think that impacted on your career choice? Would you have still pursued a photographic career had it been a Zenit?

Zenit, pentax, Nikon.. wouldn't have mattered... I was 14 and it blew me away. The fact that I got a camera and enlarger, and some books... THAT decided my career choice for me... yes :)

In many ways, looking back, the MV wasn't the best camera as it was aperture priority only with a red, green, yellow traffic light system meter... but all I know is my Dad noticed I was fascinated with looking photos, and I always stole the sunday paper off him just to look at the editorial pictures, and he must have worked every single bit of overtime he could to afford what was to him at the time, a fortune.
