Yes
Got a new laptop coming - newer, bigger, faster - wooo!

I haven't yet decided what to do with the old one which, functionally, is fine and dandy but the case no longer shines like a new one. Maybe it'll serve for BBC Iplayer and the like for a while.

The real question is what's the best way to transfer programs and data from the old machine to the new: not every program came from a disk and whilst this'll be a time for thinning out the unused, there will be plenty to move across - Photoshop Elements with several add-ins for example, Opera browser with a whole library of bookmarks, and so on.

I have a couple of 1Tb external memory drives which is where I store my processed photos and clearly, old laptop > ext HD > new laptop is a distinct possibility but is there a more direct route laptop directly to laptop?

transfer...........

you wont be able to transfer the programs, data only.
the programs wont have the install, so these will either have to be downloaded or reinstalled.
data... simple. two options :
1 - network both laptops, hten drag and drop. (not simple if they arent the same op sys)
2 - dongle. (works every time.... lol)

programs will need reinstalling on the new computer.

files can be done over the network (ideally cabled, wireless will take a while). assuming its windows make a new folder on the new computers desktop, right click it and find the sharing options, call it something and set permissions to everyone full control.

the machine should now show up browsing the network on the other machine, then drag and drop.

(let us know what operating systems both boxes are for more detailed instructions :D)
