Being 2 years into my DSLR camera I've never used the viewfinder on the EVF before, being in the habit of using the LCD instead to gauge what images are being processed. Is there any benefit of using the EVF over the LCD, or is it just a 'backup' feature of the DSLR range?

Most professional photographers self-shooting i've seen have used the EVF, so could it be using the LCD as a viewfinder is just a amateur mistake/bad habit?

Hi, a couple of things
it's not a dslr it's a bridge camera, which isn't a problem
b/ the wife has the same camera and she started with the LCD but now only uses the electric view finder she has said out is easier

Holding the camera up to your eye tends to be a more stable position than holding it out in front of you, which can result in sharper photos. The rear screen is still useful for awkward shooting angles, or if you use a tripod with remote control, say, for night shots.

Neither, used both and both have major limitations, with manualfocus-g on this one, prefer a real viewfinder 100x better.

As commented the a Fujifilm Finepix s1730 not a DSLR, its a bridge camera.

If you use the viewfinder (Either electronic, or optical) you tend to use both hands and hold the camera close to your body. You can brace you elbows against the body and it keeps the camera more steady.

If you use the screen, you tend to hold the camera at arms length and it can shake more.

Also, if it's an optical viewfinder the quality is far better than any sort of electronic display.

I cant stand using a electronic veiw finder, luckly I dont have one on any of my cameras...
Ive always used the optical veiw finder on my DSLR...There have been times Ive used the liveveiw function on my 40D. Though to be fair that was always when attched to my tripod.
I get better results from holding the camera to my eye, and you dont have to deal with glare on screen and stuff...its all in front of yours so to speak
