Every little helps!?! Tesco Broadband? Pah! *update*

Use this https://www.dslchecker.bt.com

It will give your exchange name followed by the cabinet number right at the top with all the availability listed below.
No cabinet mentioned means you extremely likely to be served direct

Excellent!
Thanks for that (y)
Although I'm not really sure what actually the results mean?
Can I get Fibre or not? it looks like Jan 2015 to me
Some "Provider" searches say yes some say no.

Yes as from Jan 2015, but be aware those dates often change and don't pin your hopes on it.
In the early days I did a lot of work on ADSL for MK and surrounding areas such as Bradwell Abbey exchange. Distances were too great for it to work and new solutions had to be found

If you want to know the state of play with your exchange stick your addy or postcode in here and you'll get a page which tells you what you've got, what you're going to get soon and whether there are any unbundled operators in your area.

SAMs doesn't know, it seems. Sam says zen Internet in not available on my exchange, but I'm with them.

Nice one, I appreciate all your help thanks
I'll hang on to that link and keep checking back with it ;)

I'm miles away from Bradwell BTW, I'm in the older part,
South / South west West edge of MK.

No problem that's enough broadband now for me, that's why I took early retirement.
Just remember its not as one person said to me and I quote "these days its as important as power and water"
No heat, light or sanitation probably edges a bit of web browsing

Thanks again

And I hope you are enjoying your retirement.
As my dad said to me, when he retired,
how the hell did I ever find time to go to work? :D

Thanks, your dad was right, does make you wonder how we fit it all in.

Still very pleasant though and can thoroughly recommend it

[OT] I have actually met someone who misses his work now he's retired! He was a branch manager for a vehicle rental firm for many years and misses the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. [/OT]

Can honestly say I don't feel like that ever, still get up early though, best part of the day.

My role entailed all aspects of broadband issues and liasing with MP's, local government, media and other influential bodies.
Not many scenarios I didn't have to investigate, some things may have changed, but no doubt the main issues still exist

Thanks for that Rich.

It seems we have recently been added to the FTTC  (I remember a flyer from the local authority not too long ago saying it was imminent, but forgot all about it)

TT reckon I could be getting around 38Mb for an extra £5-£10

I'll do a bit of shopping around in the New Year & find out what's on offer & @ what extra cost.

Another ex BT bloke here. I took early retirement 18 months ago and don't miss it one bit either! Especially as my old workmates who've stayed on say it's not a nice place to be any more.

I was with Plusnet for my broadband for a long time and recommend them. I got decent speeds for a reasonable price and the only time it ever went wrong I rang their UK based helpline and it was sorted in 30 minutes. They are owned by BT, true, but BT have left them largely alone to do their own thing.

I have been with sky for years and for me they are just great. I had to put up with an isp that was good until it got taken over by tiscali, then it was down hill with speed limiting from 1600 to 2300.
What I would do is look at your filters and try and disconnect anything else on the line just to be sure that there isn't anything interfering with the signal

Rich, do you mean TT or EE? I've been with EE since they were Freeserve (still have a .fsnet.co.uk e-mail addy somewhere!).

My mistake mate, meant to say Tiscali I changed over myself from Freeserve at the time. Its been a long time you understand :D

Tesco customer service sent me a whole list of things to try.
There is nothing else connected to the line,
new filter, nothing anywhere near the router or line that can affect its performance.
(its hard wired as well not wifi)

What annoyed me most was that after a tweak that they claimed to have done
as per an earlier post in this thread.

But earlier today its was only about .7mbs both up and down stream.

and just now, these speeds are unheard of certainly the up! even with a following wind I barely makes 1Mbs up.

No problem, Rich! It's yer age!!! ;)

you could always move up here to north wales ,due to the high mountains we can still use smoke signals and coastal beacons to communicate .this old interthingummybob is quiet fast to :thinking::thinking:

Probably not unbundled though? SamKnows only lists isps if they do the LLU thang.

Just one thought Chris, if they are working on upgrading your system it might what's causing the problem, they did ours earlier this year and BT
did warn us that there could be intermittent outages and slowing down whilst the wprk was being carried out, once it finished I have to say
mine has quickened up a fair bit

I'm damned sure its my provider TBH,
They have run a test on my line and say there is nothing wrong, blocking or interfering
with it.
Even early hours of the morning recently I was recording speeds of 0.3Mbs & 0.6Mbs. !

Tesco claimed to have changed the way the signal is sent and that leapt
way up, over what I was getting even at good times!
Earlier I recorded speeds of 3.59Mbs down and 2.21 up

Strange that, before they upgraded the exchange I used to get around 7mbs just done a test and now it's 17.09mbs :D
Uploading is only 2.99 though
I keep getting offered deals on upgrading to inifinity, but TBH don't really need it

Stop showing off :p

:banana::clap::D You're just jealous :p

You could try using an ISP that's actually an ISP, rather than a supermarket. I'd trust tesco to sell me a pound of spuds, but not an internet service.

I've been with them many years and until quite recently,
there have not been any issues.
It would also seem that they use Virgin as an ISP.
Still, come Jan when Fibre is supposed to arrive,
it will open up many possibilities :)

Patience, young pudwang. Jan will fibre arrive with speed all you want...

And that there thing was the subject of my last email to customer services,
who now seem to think that its BT issue.
I knew it wouldn't be long, before the buck was passed :D

'Tis the season for harnessing bucks rather than passing them...

If the fault is with your internet connection then it is down to your ISP to get it fixed. If that means they need to get their backhaul supplier to do so, then that is their responsibility. Your sole point of contact should be the ISP, unless they book an Openreach man in a van to come round your house (the ISP can do that directly with Openreach).

indeed, only Tesco could get BT/OpenReach to come out. You cannot deal with them directly if you are not a BT customer.

The hard bit is getting your ISP to admit there is a problem as some faults do not appear from the automated tests they run.

I absolutely agree
BUT I just knew this is the way the conversation would go with Tesco customer support ;)

The line itself is still a BT line, ie I still pay BT for the line rental.
But I know exactly what you are saying, getting them to "admit the fault"
is the hard part.

yup, but youre not paying BT for the internet. So Tesco will need to liaise with them about any thing causing issues with that.
My thoughts exactly.
To be fair they are quick to respond to emails,
but unfortunately, not that quick at sorting things out,
just finding other reasons why its not their service ;)

I shall keep at them,
I have two points ( and names) of contact now,
the Broadband team and the head office customer service manager.

after my recent dealings with customer services (not internet company a rip off holiday agent (on the beach) im begining to believe that is all they are trained or instructed more likely to do nowadays...
:mad::mad:

Well this gets curiouser and curiouser.
I got bored with Tesco, and as I still pay my line rental to BT
started an on line fault complaint, with BT.
(But also fully explained the situation with Tesco)
I also told Tesco what I had done.

BT are adamant that their remote testing
shows the line is "clear"

HOWEVER they did agree to send out an engineer
to do a few local checks, this Thursday.

Since last night, my download speed has increased
to a (so far) stable 3.1mbs and up load a slightly fluctuating 0.7-0.9Mbs up load speed.
Someone has been playing Ninja technician by the looks of it ;)

The OR engineer has been and gone.
After a thorough testing of my line,
and he said considering there is 4Km of cable between me and the exchange,
(I didn't realise it was that far TBH)
My line is giving excellent results, and certainly better than a lot for this post code!

He could also tell that Tesco had been testing / loading my line,
apparently they get reports when this happens from outside sources.
He has no idea why I should have been getting such appalling speeds,
but TBH the connection has been stable for over 24 hours.
3.1Mbs down and .7/.8 upstream.

I'll get back on to Tesco and try and get that "upstream" bumped a bit higher :D
