On Tuesday I was on ebay searching for an item. This morning ( Thurs ) I did a search for the lyrics to a song, like one does at 2.30am :thinking: Now bearing in mind my internet search and cache has been cleared twice since Tuesday, when I open the website for the lyrics, just above the lyrics is a box advertising ebay and it is scrolling through similar items to those that I was looking for :shrug: No doubt you clever bods will explain how this is done.
 
Yes it uses cookies to store what you have been looking at and when you visit a site that is run by the same ad network it displays these recently viewed items. Next seem to use it quite a lot, my girlfriend thought it was a sign from God when she saw the bag she had been looking at advertised on another site. .Very clever advertising.
 
Lots of websites have picked up on this idea. You go to a site and it drops a Cookie into your computer, so they know who you are when you next visit. Ebay, Facebook, Amazon and other advertising driven sites read those Cookies to see where you've been and therefore what adverts they can target at you.

I flew out of Liverpool airport in the summer - so I get loads of adverts for Airport car parking, car hire, EasyJet, etc even though I've had my holiday now!

Very clever and more and more prevalent. You could turn cookies off in your browser, but many websites may dislike you for doing so. However, there are suggestions the EU see this as a privacy issue, but I don't know if they will do anything about it.
 
The latest is LSOs (Local Shared Objects)/ SuperCookies, these can last longer than normal cookies. I use Better Privacy plugin in FireFox to deal with these.

Their perfactly legal and can be easily removed.

If you want rid of them get something like superantispyware free edition and that'll do the trick :thumbs:
